Can Homebots Increase Smart Home Adoption?

Forbes - Tech

"Smart" gizmos are something that excites millennials. This year's data from GfK Research suggests that 64% own at least one Internet of Things (IoT) device and 27% of surveyed millennials own more than three smart gadgets. On the other hand, there are definitely some things getting in the way of full adoption. As the same report indicates, there is a mistaken belief among 70% of millennials that all IoT devices seamlessly interoperate with one another even if they are manufactured by different vendors. Yet, this is far from truth as lack of interoperability and unified standards are among the top industry hurdles.

Latest from the coming AI robot apocalypse: we're going to be fine

#artificialintelligence

Before you get back to constructing your underground chamber to protect humanity from the hordes of death-dealing AI robots, we have a more optimistic view of the future for you. Artificial intelligence won't lead to the demise of the human race but may in fact help us deal with the massive scaling up of communication that the internet has made possible and โ€“ gasp โ€“ actually help humans understand one another a little better. Speaking at the Intel Capital conference in Palm Desert last week, three AI experts took an altogether more pragmatic and positive view of where we are going. "An artificial intelligence machine won't want to become a person," argued Reza Zadeh, the CEO of Matroid. "It will be content to serve customers."

What time is the royal wedding? Alexa, Google and Siri want to tell you

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

SAN FRANCISCO โ€“ Alexa's been studying up on the royal wedding. So go ahead, ask the Amazon assistant everything your heart desires about the upcoming marriage of American actress Meghan Markle to Britain's Prince Harry. Amazon's artificial intelligence-infused Alexa digital assistant routinely gears up for blockbuster occasions, which the May 19 union of British and Hollywood royalty promises to be. Since November, the Amazon group that preps Alexa for news and cultural events has been adding answers and information so that no one gets the dreaded "Here's what I found on the web" answer in a response to questions ranging from "Who's going to walk Meghan Markle down the aisle?" to "What time is the royal wedding?" Google Assistant, with its Google Home rival to Alexa, isn't far behind when thrown the same types of questions. In our tests, Apple's Siri drew blanks on most of them, in terms of reading the answers aloud.

Machines will soon be able to learn without being programmed

#artificialintelligence

Teaching machines to parse through large volumes of data to learn new concepts and rules is a critical area of development in artificial intelligence, experts told CNBC. That concept is called machine learning, and it's been a longtime goal for the AI discipline: The term was coined in 1959 by AI pioneer Arthur Samuel who defined it as a computer's ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. To do that, mathematical models are built and then fed with huge volumes of data, experts said. The algorithms learn to identify patterns and assumptions from those data sets that are then applied to process new information. "We want to be able to use the machine's own capability to learn from complex data," Eric Chang, senior director at Microsoft Research Asia, told CNBC.

Meet Amelia, IPSoft's Strikingly Human-Seeming AI: What She Means For Customer Support And Society

Forbes - Tech

The masters of cutting-edge AI technology recently granted me an advance visit to Amelia City, the not-yet-open lab and showplace for Amelia, IPsoft's notably humanesque AI. Amelia is so far best known for customer support/helpdesk applications (which is where my own clients, as a customer support and customer experience consultant, have encountered her to date) though her deployments have been expanding into other areas including medicine, HR, fundraising, and more. "Her" marquee clients already include some 20 of the Fortune 100, and the company is now developing pre-trained, limited-function mini-Amelias for small and medium-size businesses as well. Amelia City is at the very tip-end of Manhattan, with striking views of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty that are the mirror image of what immigrants starting a new life here would have seen. According to IPsoft CEO Chetan Dube (more from him soon), Amelia is going to bring nearly as dramatic a change to the inhabitants of our world: a new life both for betterโ€“economic results and freedom from drudgeryโ€“and worseโ€“mass disruptions that will require workforce retraining and, probably, government interventionsโ€“and will do so with great inevitability. But let's not jump ahead.

The Anker charger that brings Amazon's Alexa into your car has never been cheaper

PCWorld

Car chargers are essential for keeping your phone powered up during busy days. They're a boring, necessary accessory that get the job done, but usually don't spice up the drive. This car charger is compatible with the Alexa smart assistant found in the heart of Amazon Echo, and you can get it right now for $39 on Amazon with the code KJDLVIVA, more than 20 percent off its average $50 price. It's never been cheaper on the retail site. The Anker Roav Viva's Alexa compatibility allows you to use the skills normally associated with Echo, so you can get directions, listen to news and weather updates, stream music, make calls, order pizza, control the connected devices in your home, and more in your car--all hands-free.

TiVo update will add Amazon's Alexa to select DVRs

Engadget

Earlier this year, Tivo announced that it would make its set-top boxes compatible with voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant. According to The Verge, compatibility with Amazon Alexa is now rolling out in an update to these devices. Users will be able to control their Premiere, Roamio or Bolt DVR with their voice by June 1st if they have a compatible Alexa-enabled device. However, Alexa's functions aren't as robust as they are with TiVo's own Vox voice-controlled remote. Users can control playback, pause, fast forward, rewind or jump back eight seconds. They can also change the channel or go to the guide or home screen.
