'The Sims' Is Teaching the Household Robots of Tomorrow

#artificialintelligence

This year's Google I/O revealed that the tech company is nearing the completion of an artficially intelligent secretary that can book appointments without you having to lift a finger. But the science fiction dream of a robotic housekeeper, like Rosie from The Jetsons, remains elusive. That has a lot to do with the fact that in many respects A.I. remains incredibly dumb when asked to operate in the real world. Sure, it can ridiculously complex calculations at blazing fast speeds -- a narrow application -- but when confronted with mundane tasks like making your bed, A.I. perpetually comes up short. This is exactly why a group of computer scientists led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is teaching machines to complete household tasks using a The Sims-inspired "VirtualHome" simulator.

The Top 8 IoT Trends For 2018

#artificialintelligence

An Amazon Echo sits on a table in New York. An IHS survey estimates that there are 20 billion connected devices globally as of this year. Will 2018 be "The Year of IoT"? Not exactly, but the future looks promising and 2018 will show a promising trajectory. Despite the huge gains in connectivity, the truth is 2018 will be more of a steady (rather than explosive) growth period for the IoT, full of fits and spasms, and everything that goes along with them.

How Google Home Became the Best-Selling Smart Speaker

Amazon has led in smart speaker sales and adoption since it pioneered the category with the Echo in 2014. But for the first time, someone else has topped the smart speaker sales charts. According to data from technology and smartphone analysts with Canalys, Google beat out Amazon in first quarter smart speaker shipments this year. Google shipped 3.2 million Google Home and Home mini products in the first quarter of this year, while Amazon shipped only 2.8 million. Google has been inching closer to Amazon's sales numbers, largely aided by a gangbuster holiday season in which it grabbed 40 percent of U.S. smart speaker sales.

Apple's iOS 11.4 finally delivers on last year's promises for HomePod and iMessage

Washington Post - Technology News

Apple is finally delivering on some promises it made last year about its HomePod speaker, including giving the device the ability to link with another for stereo sound. The company released a software release called iOS 11.4 on Tuesday that unlocks more features for the smart speaker. The announcement comes just ahead of Apple's developer conference, which starts Monday -- the same conference where Apple first announced the speaker a year ago. Apple has said that it wanted to make sure the features worked well for users before releasing them. Apple's HomePod hasn't been a huge sales hit for the company, which launched two years after initial products from Amazon.com and Google began dominating the smart-speaker market.
