Manufacturing: Where The AI's Meet

Forbes - Tech

There are many components to cognition, what humans consider "thinking". There are parts scattered around research areas and markets. Too many times, people are focused on one specific branch. What's more interesting to see is how the parts are interacting. Manufacturing is a clear area where the integration of different parts of artificial intelligence (AI) is happening.

Apple releases new, faster MacBook Pro laptops

The Guardian

Apple has updated its MacBook Pro laptops with new processors, keyboards and display technology, and hands-free Siri. The update is slightly more than an expected specifications improvement for Apple's popular "Pro" laptops. Both the 13-inch and 15in MacBook Pros with Touch Bar will now come equipped with the latest eighth-generation Intel Core i5, i7 and i9 processors, bringing them into line with competition from Windows PC manufacturers such as Huawei, Dell and others. The 13in laptop gains quad-core versions of the i5 and i7 processors, up from the dual-core versions used until now, which Apple says will be up to twice as fast. The larger 15in laptop gains 6-core i7 and i9 processors, replacing the quad-core versions, which Apple says will be 70% faster.

How to make voice and video calls using Alexa and your Amazon Echo

PCWorld

If you have an Amazon Echo in your home you already know how useful it can be. Whether you want to play music, turn on your lights, or just check the weather, Amazon's Alexa-powered smart speakers can pretty much do it all. And that includes making calls. That's right, you can use your Echo devices to call people in your contacts, even if they don't have an Echo device of their own. Here's how it all works: The first thing you need to do is give Alexa access to your contacts.

What Will the Convergence Of Robotics, Personal Assistants And AI Look Like?

#artificialintelligence

Earlier this year Google unveiled Google Duplex -- a human-sounding robot able to have a conversation with a person on a telephone In many cases, the person couldn't distinguish that they were talking to a robot. It is, as Google explained, technology that is meant to carry out real world tasks over the phone, such as scheduling certain types of appointments. It is not meant for everyday conversations, Google also said -- rather Duplex has been trained in a specific domain, such as taking restaurant reservations, and can only hold a conversation in that domain. There is a school of thought that all of the current research and advancements in personal assistants, in artificial technology and in robotics are heading for a convergence of these technologies -- say a walking, talking robot that is able to run errands for you. This development is not here yet but as creations such as Duplex show, they are coming closer to reality.

Apple Hands Siri Responsibilities to Executive Poached From Google

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Mr. Giannandrea assumes control of Siri as it tries to fend off rising competition from rivals such as Alphabet Inc.'s Google Assistant and Amazon.com Those voice assistants have outperformed Apple's product in independent tests on its ability to accurately answer questions, forcing the iPhone maker to play catch up in a category it pioneered. Apple officially shifted responsibility for Siri to software chief Craig Federighi last September. It had been overseen by senior vice president Eddy Cue since 2012. Voice-driven virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, powered by artificial-intelligence technology, are gaining popularity by making it simpler for people to perform computing tasks like searching for information, shopping, and switching on lights.

5 ways AI could transform digital accessibility

#artificialintelligence

From autonomous cars to conversations with robots, artificial intelligence has the potential to transform the lives of disabled people. AbilityNet's senior accessibility and usability consultant Joe Chidzik explores some of the ways AI will make the internet more accessible for disabled people. Microsoft offers a free service through the Microsoft Translator app where audio is translated into other languages, and into text (for captions). People who have English as a second language benefit, as do people who are deaf or who have hearing loss. Read more about Microsoft Translator app helping people who are deaf.

Data Infrastructure and Approaches for Ontology-Based Drug Repurposing

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

IBM Almaden Research Center, 650 Harry Road, San Jose, California 95136 Abstract We report development of a data infrastructure for drug repurposing that takes advantage of two currently available chemical ontologies. The data infrastructure includes a database of compoundtarget associations augmented with molecular ontological labels. It also contains two computational tools for prediction of new associations. We describe two drug-repurposing systems: one, Nascent Ontological Information Retrieval for Drug Repurposing (NOIR-DR), based on an information retrieval strategy, and another, based on nonnegative matrix factorization together with compound similarity, that was inspired by recommender systems. We report the performance of both tools on a drug-repurposing task. 1 Introduction Drug repurposing is an efficient strategy for drug discovery, where new targets or activities are found for known drugs [1-5]. Drug repurposing requires the efficient representation of existing information about the activity of chemical compounds as drugs, and the development of algorithms that leverage such information and propose new indications.

Apple's new AI chief now oversees Siri, Core ML, and machine learning teams

#artificialintelligence

Apple has combined its various artificial intelligence divisions into a new structure led by recent hire John Giannandrea, formerly Google's head of search and AI. TechCrunch first reported the restructuring earlier today, and Apple confirmed the change with an update to its executive leadership page. Giannandrea will now be in charge of Apple's machine learning division, its Siri team, and the Core ML team. Core ML is the machine learning API Apple launched last year to help native AI tasks and AI-focused apps and services from third-party developers run more efficiently on iOS devices. Giannandrea's official title will be chief of machine learning and AI strategy, and it's clear Apple leadership is putting its faith in the executive to help beef up its AI efforts.

Artificial General Intelligence Breakthroughs To Watch Out For In 2018

#artificialintelligence

As our society's technological progress marches forward, we've become ever more fascinated with the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI). From IBM's Jeopardy-playing computer, Watson to television programs like Westworld, we've collectively begun exploring and philosophizing about the potential of AGI. Of course, most discussions about AGI in our popular culture are focused on the future, and not the current realities of the present when it comes to artificial general intelligence. Below, we'll discuss the current realities of AGI and what breakthroughs we're on the cusp of in 2018. How Close Are We To True Artificial General Intelligence? Software programs built into your iPhones and other hardware like Siri or Amazon's Alexa may lead you to believe that we're very close to true artificial intelligence.
