Innovate or die: varieties of retail innovation
Perhaps the most transformative area of innovation in retail in recent years has been in the collection and interpretation of data. This happens to be the primary service Evo offers to clients. The simple reorganization of data can have a major impact on retail businesses. Most retailers segment data based on their best guess. Stores in similar regions get segmented together as do products with similar attributes.
#KindrGrindr: Gay dating app launches anti-racism campaign
If you're a black or Asian user of gay dating app Grindr, then it's possible you've encountered racism while using it. Some users of the app have said they've come across what they believe are discriminatory statements on other profiles - things like "no blacks and no Asians". Others say they've faced racist comments in conversation with users when they've rejected their advances. Now Grindr has taken a stand against discrimination on its platform and says no user is entitled to tear another down for "being who they are". It's launched the #KindrGrindr campaign to raise awareness of racism and discrimination and promote inclusivity among users. It says it will ban users who "bully or defame" others and will remove offensive language from profiles.
'Alexa โ can you teach my kids some manners, please?'
The work of an etiquette expert is never-ending. No sooner have you adjusted to a world in which the households you advise may have few or โ whisper it โ no staff, than the technology giants develop personal assistants using artificial intelligence. It is a whole new minefield and, as the Times reports, one already developing new expertise. One BBC tech executive told a conference audience on Tuesday that her solution to children developing poor manners due to Alexa, Siri and their rivals (the AI will respond whether you say "please" or not) was for adults in the house to say "please" and "thank you" to the AIs at all times. With that first step in mind, here is our extensive and scientific list of etiquette do's and don'ts when dealing with your AI assistant: Do: say please and thank you.

5 Ways Artificial Intelligence Is Already Transforming the Banking Industry
From virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, to chatbots created by Facebook and Drift, AI is having a significant impact on the lives of consumers. A study from Statista showed that the number of consumers using virtual assistants worldwide is expected to exceed one billion in 2018. Additionally, a 2018 survey by Accenture projected that 37 percent of U.S. consumers will own a digital voice assistant (DVA) device by the end of 2018. It is readily apparent how AI-powered technology is making inroads into everyday life through DVAs and other consumer products, but AI is also having a transformative effect on an industry that impacts virtually all consumers and businesses: banking. Here are five ways that AI is already transforming the banking industry.
Amazon helps others make accessories for Echo speakers
There aren't many Echo-oriented accessories beyond Amazon's own Echo Button, but that's about to change very shortly. Amazon has released a beta Alexa Gadgets Toolkit that lets hardware brands make Echo-focused Bluetooth accessories that respond to Alexa commands. You can have a cuckoo clock that responds to your Echo's wake word or a notification, a switch that releases dog food after an alarm, or a chime that sounds when time's up. A future update will even allow visual interaction with music -- it's easy to see a lamp that pulses in sync with Amazon Music tracks. Child-oriented updates will also let developers build gadgets that include compatible kid-friendly skills.
Artificial Intelligence is the Catalyst of the Internet of Things
Businesses across the world are rapidly leveraging the Internet-of-Things (IoT) to create new products and services that are opening up new business opportunities and creating new business models. The resulting transformation is ushering in a new era of how companies run their operations and engage with customers. However, tapping into the IoT is only part of the story. For companies to realize the full potential of IoT enablement, they need to combine IoT with rapidly-advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, which enable'smart machines' to simulate intelligent behavior and make well-informed decisions with little or no human intervention. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are terms that project futuristic, sci-fi, imagery; both have been identified as drivers of business disruption in 2017.

Fainberg, Joachim, Krause, Ben, Dobre, Mihai, Damonte, Marco, Kahembwe, Emmanuel, Duma, Daniel, Webber, Bonnie, Fancellu, Federico
Conversational agents are gaining popularity with the increasing ubiquity of smart devices. However, training agents in a data driven manner is challenging due to a lack of suitable corpora. This paper presents a novel method for gathering topical, unstructured conversational data in an efficient way: self-dialogues through crowd-sourcing. Alongside this paper, we include a corpus of 3.6 million words across 23 topics. We argue the utility of the corpus by comparing self-dialogues with standard two-party conversations as well as data from other corpora.
