The Parameterized Complexity of Motion Planning for Snake-Like Robots

We study the parameterized complexity of a variant of the classic video game Snake that models real-world problems of motion planning. Given a snake-like robot with an initial position and a final position in an environment (modeled by a graph), our objective is to determine whether the robot can reach the final position from the initial position without intersecting itself. Naturally, this problem models a wide-variety of scenarios, ranging from the transportation of linked wagons towed by a locomotor at an airport or a supermarket to the movement of a group of agents that travel in an “ant-like” fashion and the construction of trains in amusement parks. Unfortunately, already on grid graphs, this problem is PSPACE-complete. Nevertheless, we prove that even on general graphs, the problem is solvable in FPT time with respect to the size of the snake. In particular, this shows that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT). Towards this, we show how to employ color-coding to sparsify the configuration graph of the problem to reduce its size significantly. We believe that our approach will find other applications in motion planning. Additionally, we show that the problem is unlikely to admit a polynomial kernel even on grid graphs, but it admits a treewidth-reduction procedure. To the best of our knowledge, the study of the parameterized complexity of motion planning problems (where the intermediate configurations of the motion are of importance) has so far been largely overlooked. Thus, our work is pioneering in this regard.


Evolution of Coordination in Pairwise and Multi-player Interactions via Prior Commitments

Upon starting a collective endeavour, it is important to understand your partners' preferences and how strongly they commit to a common goal. Establishing a prior commitment or agreement in terms of posterior benefits and consequences from those engaging in it provides an important mechanism for securing cooperation in both pairwise and multiparty cooperation dilemmas. Resorting to methods from Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT), here we analyse how prior commitments can also be adopted as a tool for enhancing coordination when its outcomes exhibit an asymmetric payoff structure, in both pairwise and multiparty interactions. Arguably, coordination is more complex to achieve than cooperation since there might be several desirable collective outcomes in a coordination problem (compared to mutual cooperation, the only desirable collective outcome in cooperation dilemmas), especially when these outcomes entail asymmetric benefits for those involved. Our analysis, both analytically and via numerical simulations, shows that whether prior commitment would be a viable evolutionary mechanism for enhancing coordination and the overall population social welfare strongly depends on the collective benefit and severity of competition, and more importantly, how asymmetric benefits are resolved in a commitment deal. Moreover, in multiparty interactions, prior commitments prove to be crucial when a high level of group diversity is required for optimal coordination. Our results are shown to be robust for different selection intensities. We frame our model within the context of the technology adoption decision making, but the obtained results are applicable to other coordination problems.


The Affiliate Matching Problem: On Labor Markets where Firms are Also Interested in the Placement of Previous Workers

In many labor markets, workers and firms are connected via affiliative relationships. A management consulting firm wishes to both accept the best new workers but also place its current affiliated workers at strong firms. Similarly, a research university wishes to hire strong job market candidates while also placing its own candidates at strong peer universities. We model this affiliate matching problem in a generalization of the classic stable marriage setting by permitting firms to state preferences over not just which workers to whom they are matched, but also to which firms their affiliated workers are matched. Based on results from a human survey, we find that participants (acting as firms) give preference to their own affiliate workers in surprising ways that violate some assumptions of the classical stable marriage problem. This motivates a nuanced discussion of how stability could be defined in affiliate matching problems; we give an example of a marketplace which admits a stable match under one natural definition of stability, and does not for that same marketplace under a different, but still natural, definition. We conclude by setting a research agenda toward the creation of a centralized clearing mechanism in this general setting.


Achieving Proportionality up to the Maximin Item with Indivisible Goods

We study the problem of fairly allocating indivisible goods and focus on the classic fairness notion of proportionality. The indivisibility of the goods is long known to pose highly non-trivial obstacles to achieving fairness, and a very vibrant line of research has aimed to circumvent them using appropriate notions of approximate fairness. Recent work has established that even approximate versions of proportionality (PROPx) may be impossible to achieve even for small instances, while the best known achievable approximations (PROP1) are much weaker. We introduce the notion of proportionality up to the maximin item (PROPm) and show how to reach an allocation satisfying this notion for any instance involving up to five agents with additive valuations. PROPm provides a well motivated middle-ground between PROP1 and PROPx, while also capturing some elements of the well-studied maximin share (MMS) benchmark: another relaxation of proportionality that has attracted a lot of attention.


Contiguous Cake Cutting: Hardness Results and Approximation Algorithms

We study the fair allocation of a cake, which serves as a metaphor for a divisible resource, under the requirement that each agent should receive a contiguous piece of the cake. While it is known that no finite envy-free algorithm exists in this setting, we exhibit efficient algorithms that produce allocations with low envy among the agents. We then establish NP-hardness results for various decision problems on the existence of envy-free allocations, such as when we fix the ordering of the agents or constrain the positions of certain cuts. In addition, we consider a discretized setting where indivisible items lie on a line and show a number of hardness results extending and strengthening those from prior work. Finally, we investigate connections between approximate and exact envy-freeness, as well as between continuous and discrete cake cutting.


Learning Task-Agnostic Action Spaces for Movement Optimization

We propose a novel method for exploring the dynamics of physically based animated characters, and learning a task-agnostic action space that makes movement optimization easier. Like several previous papers, we parameterize actions as target states, and learn a short-horizon goal-conditioned low-level control policy that drives the agent's state towards the targets. Our novel contribution is that with our exploration data, we are able to learn the low-level policy in a generic manner and without any reference movement data. Trained once for each agent or simulation environment, the policy improves the efficiency of optimizing both trajectories and high-level policies across multiple tasks and optimization algorithms. We also contribute novel visualizations that show how using target states as actions makes optimized trajectories more robust to disturbances; this manifests as wider optima that are easy to find. Due to its simplicity and generality, our proposed approach should provide a building block that can improve a large variety of movement optimization methods and applications.

TripleTree: A Versatile Interpretable Representation of Black Box Agents and their Environments

In explainable artificial intelligence, there is increasing interest in understanding the behaviour of autonomous agents to build trust and validate performance. Modern agent architectures, such as those trained by deep reinforcement learning, are currently so lacking in interpretable structure as to effectively be black boxes, but insights may still be gained from an external, behaviourist perspective. Inspired by conceptual spaces theory, we suggest that a versatile first step towards general understanding is to discretise the state space into convex regions, jointly capturing similarities over the agent's action, value function and temporal dynamics within a dataset of observations. We create such a representation using a novel variant of the CART decision tree algorithm, and demonstrate how it facilitates practical understanding of black box agents through prediction, visualisation and rule-based explanation.
