As someone who lives between two countries, I've relied heavily on machine translation for a number of years. It took me years before I could communicate casually with my in-laws (they're fluent in German and Polish, but not English), without my wife serving as an interpreter. Google Brain's Neural Network AI has reportedly created its own universal language, which allows the system to translate between other languages without knowing them. By simply teaching the AI "how to translate from Portuguese to English and English to Spanish," the system was able to then translate from Spanish to Portuguese on its own without any outside guidance. "In the last 10 years, Google Translate has grown from supporting just a few languages to 103, translating over 140 billion words every day," declared Google in their research blog. "To make this possible, we needed to build and maintain many different systems in order to translate between any two languages, incurring significant computational cost. With neural networks reforming many fields, we were convinced we could raise the translation quality further, but doing so would mean rethinking the technology behind Google Translate." "In'Google's Multilingual Neural Machine Translation System: Enabling Zero-Shot Translation,' we address this challenge by extending our previous GNMT system, allowing for a single system to translate between multiple languages," they continued.

Previously, Google taught their artificial intelligence (AI) to play games that even went to the extent of the AI creating its own encryption. According to Wired, the AI used its language translation tool to create a new'language' on its own. Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) was put online last September. The system, which aims to improve how Google Translate works in translating languages by looking into entire sentences instead of words or short phrases.

Google has previously taught its artificial intelligence to play games, and it's even capable of creating its own encryption. Now, its language translation tool has used machine learning to create a'language' all of its own. In September, the search giant turned on its Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system to help it automatically improve how it translates languages. The machine learning system analyses and makes sense of languages by looking at entire sentences – rather than individual phrases or words. Following several months of testing, the researchers behind the AI have seen it be able to blindly translate languages even if it's never studied one of the languages involved in the translation.
