Facebook christens bot bandwagon: Business bonanza or brand risk? ZDNet
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told developers that bots via its Messenger Platform is the future, but what remains to be seen is whether users will go for them as they work out early artificial intelligence issues. At the F8 developer conference, Facebook took the wraps off of its bots for Messenger effort, a series of application programming interfaces and tools for business bots. Google, Apple and every enterprise vendor will have some form of them. Simply put, chat bots are automated and conversational reps that can talk up products, get you to stores, be helpful and an assistant at times. Bots get you the goods without the legwork. Every tech player will be talking some form of bots.
Facebook Messenger bots: Site hopes to kill apps, and maybe even Facebook itself, with new chatbots
Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display
Sumo Logic's new platform powered by machine learning technology - SD Times
While there are several architectural and modern application life-cycle changes, one thing that is growing exponentially is machine data. With the right visibility, machine data could help digital businesses keep up with their modern applications by giving them access to metrics data in real-time continuous intelligence. To help companies learn from machine data, Sumo Logic, the cloud-native analytics service, today announced its first machine data analytics platform that unifies logs and metrics. As a way to keep up with these constant architectural changes, and to manage the volume of the data that exists, this platform will analyze structured metrics data and unstructured log data together in real-time. Sumo Logic's new platform allows teams to handle the structure types of log and time-series metrics data natively, which makes viewable log and metrics analytics available in real-time through graphical, interactive dashboards.
AI and Robots Are Coming for Your Job. Here's What You Need to Know
According to the World Economic Forum, advances in technology such as robotics and artificial intelligence will lead to a net loss of 5 million jobs by the year 2020โฆand that number might actually be on the low-end. Thanks to the exponential nature of technological advances, and a confluence of various keystone technologies improving simultaneously, incredible advances are being made in the fields of AI and robotics that are rapidly chipping away at jobs in various industries. What jobs are at risk? For now, anything that is repetitive (such as factory work and assembly line jobs), low-skill (taxi drivers, janitorial jobs, cashiers, line cooks, etc.), or high-skill but narrow scope (stock brokers, data analysts, certain types of medical professionals, etc.). As an employee, it seems scary, but think of it from a consumer's perspective: perfectly assembled products that cost less, food that is cooked in a clean environment with vastly less risk of food-borne illness, cars that don't kill over 1,000,000 people per year globally, and medical technology that can identify your illness and recommend a treatment plan with greater accuracy than any human doctor ever could.
Nvidia Unveils New Supercomputers and AI Algorithms
Describing his company as "all-in" when it comes to artificial intelligence and virtual reality, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang today unveiled new GPUs and AI platforms for developers at Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, Calif. While many of the new products and platforms are intended for data centers, Nvidia designed its new VR rendering tool, called Iray VR, to work with consumer devices. The Iray VR algorithms will let users experience more realistic scenes thanks to its ray-tracing technology. It's designed to accurately represent real-world materials and surfaces, so "carbon fiber looks like carbon fiber," Huang said. There are two versions of Iray VR, one for desktops and data centers, and a version called Iray VR Lite that can run on a wide range of platforms, from full-scale VR headsets to the free Google Cardboard.
How Machine Learning is Making Hoteliers Smarter
Over the last two decades, hotel owners have seen the power of their brands' promise move away from their marketing teams into the hands of the consumer. Aided by the rise of online review platforms like TripAdvisor, hotel prices can easily be compared with other properties in the market. Not to mention, page one of Google search results is dominated by online travel agents, which makes it easier for consumers to compare independent hotels with one another, as well as offer alternative accommodation categories like villas or apartments to the same pool of potential customers. The sharing economy has not only affected many taxi car hire businesses, but has also increasingly begun shifting demand away from hotels in both leisure and business segments. The apartments available for share tend to increase even more during peak travel times.
Google Calendar's newest feature uses machine learning to help you actually accomplish your goals
Google Calendar has launched a new feature called Goals that uses machine learning to help you figure out when you have time to pencil in stuff like spending time with your family or exercise. The feature is now available for Calendar's Android and iOS apps. Goals are set up by clicking into a category (which currently include Exercise, "Build a Skill," and "Me Time," though they can also be customized) and selecting a specific activity. Then Calendar will automatically find open slots, fill them in with your goal, and send reminders. If you schedule something else during those times, Google Calendar will find another window for your goal--but, in a tool that will surely be chronically abused by procrastinators, they can also be deferred.
Facebook bots are coming! Mark Zuckerberg shows off AI assistants
Mark Zuckerberg has revealed Facebook's plans for the next decade - claiming the firm's goal is to'give everyone the power to share anything with anyone'. Speaking at the firm's F8 developer conference in San Francisco, he predicted the next decade will revolve around video - saying it will have as big an effect as mobile phones. He also predicted the emergence of smart AI bots, and showed off virtual reality glasses indistiguishable from normal glasses he said could be available in a decade. Profile Expression Kit: People can now use third-party apps to create profile videos with just a few taps.
What is Machine Intelligence vs. Machine Learning vs. Deep Learning vs. Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
We return to the question of terminology that we started this post with. Our feeling is that the term "artificial intelligence" has been used in so many ways that it is now confusing. People use AI to refer to all three approaches described above, plus others, and therefore has become almost meaningless. The term "machine learning" is a more narrowly defined term for machines that learn from data, including simple neural models such as ANNs and Deep Learning. We use the term "machine intelligence" to refer to machines that learn but are aligned with the Biological Neural Network approach. Although there still is much work ahead of us, we believe the Biological Neural Network approach is the fastest and most direct path to truly intelligent machines. This blog entry was modified on Thu Mar 24 2016 to clarify the timing of neural network research.
