For a computer to learn how to speak to a human, it needs to do what we all do naturally. We read a sentence, hear some words, and attach meaning to those words and phrases. We extract information and context. We think of a response based on what we learned. Most human conversation is not.

Being a sub-set of artificial intelligence, machine learning involves algorithms allowing computers to autonomously learn from input data. A fundamental distinction from "usual" software programs, such as Photoshop or, say, Excel, is that in machine learning computers don't have to be explicitly programmed but can change and improve their algorithms by themselves. The history of machine learning goes back to the 1950th. The first learning program was created by Arthur Samuel in 1952 and it was the game of checkers.

One of the most frequent used techniques in statistics is linear regression where we investigate the potential relationship between a variable of interest (often called the response variable but there are many other names in use) and a set of one of more variables (known as the independent variables or some other term). In the first part, an overview on complex networks and network-based machine learning is presented, offering necessary background material. In the second part, we describe in details some specific techniques based on complex networks for supervised, non-supervised, and semi-supervised learning. Particularly, a stochastic particle competition technique for both non-supervised and semi-supervised learning using a stochastic nonlinear dynamical system is described in details. Moreover, an analytical analysis is supplied, which enables one to predict the behavior of the proposed technique.

OpenAI's researchers gather around the first AI supercomputer in a box, Nvidia DGX-1. Dubbed an "AI supercomputer-in-a-box", the DGX-1 will be used by the non-profit research team to explore the challenges surrounding artificial intelligence. There are some things that machines are simply better at doing than humans, but humans still have plenty going for them. Here's a look at how the two are going to work in concert to deliver a more powerful future for IT, and the human race. The idea is to find ways OpenAI can use the supercomputer as it works on projects like artificial personal assistants, autonomous cars, and robots for the everyman. Debuted earlier this year, Nvidia describes the DGX-1 system as the first deep learning supercomputer that's built for artificial intelligence.

It feels like the barbarians are continually at the gate. We can't seem to go more than a week before a new data breach is in the news, impacting potentially millions of individuals. The targets range from companies like Omni Hotels, who had been breached affecting up to 50,000 customers whose personal and credit card information was exposed, to North Carolina State University, where over 38,000 students personal information, including their SSN's, were at risk. As I mentioned in a recent blog'Internet of Things and Big Data – who owns your data?', we have been storing our personal and credit card information in a variety of systems, credit card companies, banks, online retailers, hotels- and that's just naming a few. The information in those systems is more valuable than gold to the hackers.
