My preferred way to do this is through listening to podcasts. I've listened to a bunch of machine learning and data science podcasts in the last few months, so I thought I'd share my favorites: Every other week, they release a 10–15 minute episode where hosts, Kyle and Linda Polich give a short primer on topics like k-means clustering, natural language processing and decision tree learning, often using analogies related to their pet parrot, Yoshi.

Applied Recognition and PS Solutions have jointly developed a prototype smart mirror that can provide personalized information to individuals using Applied Recognition's facial recognition authentication technology combined with future machine learning. The "Information Mirror" displays information relevant to the individual such as the weather forecast, news, etcetera based on information which has been pre-set, and can be used as a bathroom mirror. By using Applied Recognition's facial recognition authentication technology, Ver-ID Authentication, the individual reflected in the mirror can be automatically recognized and have personalized content displayed. In combination with machine learning in the future, it will also be possible to make suggestions according to lifestyle such as clothing, food or transport routes based on the individual's schedule. "Applied Recognition is grateful for the opportunity to work with PS Solutions, the leader in Japanese IoT solutions, on this facial recognition prototype," said Applied Recognition CEO Ray Ganong.

Many of the latest machine learning and data science tools purport to be easy to work with compared to previous generations of such frameworks and libraries. Chinese search engine giant Baidu now has an open source project in the same vein: a machine learning system it claims is easier to train and use because it exposes its functions through Python libraries. PaddlePaddle -- "Paddle" stands for "PArallel Distributed Deep LEarning" -- was developed by Baidu to augment many of its own products with deep learning. Baidu touted PaddlePaddle's speech transcription in Chinese, either for transcribing broadcasts or as a speech-to-text system to replace keyboards in smartphones. The company claims it needed 20,000 hours of audio as training material to achieve these results with its framework.

Today Google has introduced a nifty new reporting feature to its Google Analytics app, "Automated Insights." With the new feature, the app can now show specific reports, which previously would have taken hours to create, as soon as the app is opened. The new feature, rolling out today on Android and iOS, is not anything particularly new as IBM has very similar functionality through Watson Analytics, but this is a first for a mobile application. While it may seem a bit odd for Google to release this on mobile first (it will debut on the desktop "soon"), there's definitely a good argument for it. For many marketers who need to pull up statistics on the go, in a meeting, or on a business trip, their computer may not always be available.

In this Article Forge review, I cover the basics of it's control menus, generating a new article and each of the content settings switches and sliders to customize the content generated. Articles from 200 to 750 words can be created from seed keywords. Images and videos can be optionally added. Auto-generated Titles and paragraph settings are supported as well. Basic spinning support is provided, but Article Forge can also link to a Word AI spinner account for high-quality word substitutions.

Tech giant Microsoft and large equipment manufacturer Liebherr are collaborating on a new generation of smart refrigerators that would help in shopping and planning meals with intelligent food management. "As part of the Liebherr household appliances division's digital initiative, the duo would develop'SmartDeviceBox', a communication module which fits into refrigerators and freezers, connecting them to the internet," T J Hazen, Principal Data Scientist Manager at Microsoft, wrote. The system, which would utilise the same machine learning technology used in Microsoft's artificial intelligence (AI) assistant Cortana, is designed to have a long lifecycle. With this technology, modular units can be integrated and upgraded at any time in existing SmartDevice-ready appliances to create value and comfort for customers through new digital features and solutions, the post on Microsoft blog said. With the refrigerators, stored groceries can be monitored using internal cameras and object recognition technology.

Artificial intelligence could improve the interpretation of lung function tests for the diagnosis of long-term lung diseases, according to the findings of a new study. The results, presented today (04 September, 2016) at the European Respiratory Society's International Congress, are the first to explore the potential use of artificial intelligence for improving the accuracy of the diagnosis of lung diseases. Current testing requires a series of methods including a spirometry test, which measures the amount (volume) and the speed (flow) of air during breathing, followed by a body plethysmography test measuring static lung volumes and airways resistance and finally a diffusion test, which measures the amount of oxygen and other gases that cross the lungs' air sacs. Analysis of the results of these tests is largely based on expert opinion and international guidelines, attempting to detect a pattern in the findings. In this new study, researchers included data from 968 people who were undergoing complete lung function testing for the first time.
