What's Next for Artificial Intelligence
The traditional definition of artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to execute tasks and solve problems in ways normally attributed to humans. Some tasks that we consider simple--recognizing an object in a photo, driving a car--are incredibly complex for AI. Machines can surpass us when it comes to things like playing chess, but those machines are limited by the manual nature of their programming; a 30 gadget can beat us at a board game, but it can't do--or learn to do--anything else. This is where machine learning comes in. Show millions of cat photos to a machine, and it will hone its algorithms to improve at recognizing pictures of cats.

The race to build a viable self-driving car is getting a little congested. In a matter of months, the concept went from being a futuristic dream driven mainly by Alphabet Inc.'s Google to an ultra-competitive field populated by traditional automakers and tech companies alike. Ford Motor Co. says it will mass-produce an autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals by 2021. Uber Technologies Inc. plans to have passengers riding in self-driving cars on the streets of Pittsburgh within weeks. Auto supplier Delphi Automotive PLC is teaming up with Israeli software maker Mobileye to build a self-driving platform that will be sold to automakers by 2019.

And the take up of IAM solutions is set to gain even more momentum. A recent MarketsandMarkets research report predicted that the global market for these solutions will grow to US 12.8 billion ( 9.7 billion) by 2020, up from US 7.2 billion ( 5.4 billion) in 2015. IAM solutions enable a network or system to authenticate the identity of a user against a set of pre-prescribed credentials.
New York City's Fire Department Will Soon Be Using Drones
Drones will give firefighters real-time information about an emergency. The New York City Fire Department is about to debut a drone that, appropriately, is painted fire engine red. The aircraft will soon be responding to fires and other emergencies, giving firefighters a clearer view of what they are facing. The LiveSky drone, created by Hoverfly, weighs eight pounds, can capture both video and infrared images and costs 85,000. New York City's landscape is filled with obstacles, and can pose a challenge for the drone's GPS as it tries to get reception.
Intel's siloed business units unify around IoT and connectivity
Intel has many disparate business units doing their own thing. The challenging task of tethering them is a top priority for Intel's second-in-command, Venkata Renduchintala. Renduchintala, known as Murthy, was appointed last November to run Intel's PC, client, and internet of things businesses. He's made his presence felt: Within six months of his appointment, Intel cut struggling products like mobile CPUs and sharpened its focus on growth areas of IoT, servers, and connectivity. One common thread in all the areas of growth is connectivity, with modems and wireless products now as important to Intel as its CPUs.
G-7 transport chiefs meeting in Nagano to weigh self-driving car regulations
Transport ministers from the Group of Seven countries are expected to agree at their meeting in central Japan to set up a working panel tasked with creating global safety regulations for commercializing and promoting self-driving cars, a draft declaration of their summit showed Thursday. The envisaged accord at their three-day meeting in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, from Sept. 23, comes amid intense competition among automakers and information technology companies worldwide over self-driving cars. In the draft declaration, the G-7 ministers pledge to cooperate and exercise their leadership, reflecting the advanced economies' hope that regulations set by the governments would give clear guidelines for manufacturers on how to ensure safety for self-driving cars. Autonomous driving, which frees drivers from controlling a vehicle, involves artificial intelligence technology in grasping the surrounding traffic situation. The draft says commercializing self-driving will help prevent traffic accidents, ease traffic jams and reduce the burden on drivers.
