iOS 10 lands with a bump as users report problems with latest Apple system upgrade - Daily Record
The latest version of Apple's mobile operating system which powers the iPhone and iPad, iOS 10, has suffered issues during its launch on Tuesday night. Millions of users were quick to access the free update when it became available, however there have been mixed reports on social media, with some users reporting their smartphones and tablets crashing, with only a connection to a computer via USB fixing the issue, some have claimed. Apple issued a statement confirming a "brief issue with the software update process affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability", but this had now been fixed. The free upgrade includes a variety of new features, including an overhauled Messages app with more emojis and animations, a new notification system for the lock screen and virtual assistant Siri being able to integrate into more apps. Users of the iPhone and iPad in the UK with a compatible device - iPhone 5 and newer, or iPad mini 2 and newer - are eligible for the update.

Robots will be used to suppress attempts by the masses to rise up, a CEO who works with artificial intelligence has warned. Brad Wardell, founder of software company Stardock, said that automation will replace more and more jobs; but the elite few left with all the wealth will be able to crush any attempts to rebel with an array of security machines. "My day job is to evaluate technology and try to predict where it's going to go next," Wardell said in a blog post published Monday. "And with that, I am telling you the automation revolution isn't happening soon. Initiatives aimed at protecting workers made obsolete โ like the universal basic income โ are not a given, especially if those in charge of the machines don't have any incentive to worry about the working class. With adequate protection for accumulated wealth, Wardell believes the societal shift brought about by automation could be catastrophic. Bank of America analysts think there's a 50 per cent chance we live in The Matrix
Analysts at Bank of America have reportedly suggested there is a 20 to 50 per cent chance our world is a Matrix-style virtual reality and everything we experience is just a simulation. The report, which was issued to clients, also implies even if our world was an illusion, we would never know about it. Bank of America Merrill Lynch backed up the claims by citing comments from leading philosophers, scientists and other thinkers. The position, posted on Dice, will pay between 140,000 and 160,000 to the right candidate who's skilled in machine learning platforms as well as data mining, statistical modeling, and natural language processing. Job-seekers who possess those skills typically could expect multiple job offers, says Matt Leighton, director of recruitment at Mondo, which specializes in digital marketing and technology staffing. The job titles vary from company to company; some might post positions in search of a data scientist or machine learning engineer, others might be after a natural language processing (NLP) programmer or cognitive computing engineer. But hiring companies are seeking the same talent: "They're people who create algorithms through code that allow computers to self-learn," Leighton says.

SAS adds cognitive computing support
At SAS's Analytics Experience conference in Las Vegas yesterday, the analytics powerhouse unveiled two new additions to its SAS Viya analytics platform aimed at supporting cognitive computing: SAS Visual Investigator and SAS Visual Data Mining and Machine Learning. "Cognitive computing is disruptive, combining technologies such as natural language processing, image processing, text mining and machine learning to augment human intelligence," Oliver Schabenberger, SAS executive vice president and CTO, said in a statement yesterday. "SAS has supported cognitive technologies in analytics for decades. The exciting change is applying deep learning and high-performance computing to achieve greater automation and accuracy in the interaction between computers and people." Visual Investigator is a new, cloud-ready investigation and alert management product designed to help intelligence analysts and investigators uncover insider threats, disease outbreaks, loan risks, drug trafficking, fraud and other emerging issues.
AI and Natural Language Processing Helps Assess Breast Cancer Risk
Natural language processing (NLP) software algorithms for mammographic imaging characteristics and mammogram reports provide an automated means to aid in data extraction and analysis for clinical decision support, according to a study published in Cancer. Using the enterprise-wide data warehouse at the Houston Methodist Hospital, the Methodist Environment for Translational Enhancement and Outcomes Research (METEOR), for patients with Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 5 mammogram readings, researchers developed NLP software algorithms to automatically extract mammographic and pathologic findings from free text mammogram and pathology reports. The patients had undergone breast biopsy within three months of the date of their abnormal mammogram, between January 2006 and May 2015. A total of 543 patients who met the inclusion criteria were identified using the NLP algorithm to obtain key characteristics. The results showed that patients with estrogen receptor-positive tumors were more likely to have spiculated margins, and those with tumors that overexpressed human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) were more likely to have heterogeneous and pleomorphic calcifications.Stephen T.
