NVIDIA Corp announced the debut of a smaller and more efficient artificial intelligence (AI) system for self-driving cars that would operate Baidu's navigation and autonomous vehicle technology. According to a Reuters report, Nvidia debuted its new Drive PX 2 at the GPU Technology Conference in Beijing. Chinese web giant Baidu will roll out the in-vehicle computer as its autonomous driving computer system. Nvidia's latest Drive PX 2 computer, which launched in January, uses 10 watts of power and is half the size of the original version.

Over the last 30 years, consumers have reaped the benefits of dramatic technological advances. In many countries, most people now have in their pockets a personal computer more powerful than the mainframes of the 1980s. The Atari 800XL computer that I developed games on when I was in high school was powered by a microprocessor with 3,500 transistors; the computer running on my iPhone today has two billion transistors. Back then, a gigabyte of storage cost 100,000 and was the size of a refrigerator; today it's basically free and is measured in millimeters. Even with these massive gains, we can expect still faster progress as the entire planet--people and things--becomes connected.

As a cease-fire in Syria entered its third day, authorities said Wednesday that the government was to begin withdrawing forces from a strategic road in the besieged rebel-held area of Aleppo, a move that would open the way for U.N. relief shipments. Syrian forces, with Russian air support, closed the road in July, thereby completing the encirclement of rebel districts with a population of as many as 300,000. A withdrawal south of Castello Road was to begin Thursday morning, according to Russian state news agency TASS. Rebel forces reportedly were to retreat simultaneously to positions north of the road. But it remained unclear whether residents of the city would accept the sacks of flour and food baskets the United Nations hopes to deliver.

As if visiting the dentist wasn't scary enough, Orange County health officials are alerting parents to an outbreak of oral infections that appear linked to a children's dental office in Anaheim. At least one case of a Mycobacterial abscessus infection has been confirmed in a patient who visited the Children's Dental Group, in the 2100 block of East Lincoln Avenue in Anaheim, according to the OC Health Care Agency. The infection was detected after the child underwent a pulpotomy procedure to remove or treat an infected tooth, health officials said. The healthcare agency received multiple reports last week of children who had developed infections after undergoing the same procedure at the office. Eight children showed signs of "slowly progressive oral cellulitis" with dental abscesses and/or respiratory infections, officials said.

A few weeks ago, I was in the process of transitioning out from one project to another at work. This provided an awesome time window to read up on some of the long pending topics of interest. Machine learning topped that list. It is a field that has already permeated the technology world deeply but I had no understanding of what it is all about. Just a few weeks of surface level reading since then (and playing around with some of the tools) has left me pretty convinced that we are fast accelerating towards a general artificial intelligence.

Today, the company is shifting gears on the question of how it will keep hold of and track that information: Evernote is migrating all of its data, including some 5 billion notes, to Google's Cloud Platform. As part of that, it will also start to use Google's machine learning APIs to help access and use that data in different ways. As a result, Evernote will be shutting down its previous storage architecture that was based around a private cloud infrastructure, along with some of its own tech. Evernote's new CTO Anirban Kundu told me the first two areas that will be replaced by Google's machine learning APIs are its voice recognition for speech-to-text translations; and natural language processing, used to help search for contextual content. Evernote says it will start the migration to Google in early October, with "a complete migration by the end of 2016."
