Learning sciences emerged in the 1980s from roots in cognitive science and AI, as well as other social sciences such as linguistics and anthropology. LS distinctively investigates the process of learning, in contrast to research on teaching, instructional design, policies, and institutions. LS also focuses on research in authentic educational settings, which contrasts with psychology or brain science research conducted in a laboratory. Learning scientists use and develop a variety of methods and theories, leading to a large body of knowledge. The field also has blurry lines with neighboring fields such as AI in education.

Academia heavily relies on trust. This trust-based system, however, creates a significant vulnerability: identity theft. In this Opinion column, we describe newly uncovered cases of identity theft within the scientific peer-review process within the research area of artificial intelligence (AI), involving modus operandi that could also disrupt other academic procedures. We begin by outlining the peer-review process, focusing on scientific conferences since they are the most prominent venues of publication in computer science. Peer review is foundational to scientific inquiry, relying on researchers to voluntarily apply their expertise in evaluating scientific papers.

A recent study found that one of the top uses of generative AI is companionship: On platforms like Character.AI, Replika, or Meta AI, people can create personalized chatbots to pose as the ideal friend, romantic partner, parent, therapist, or any other persona they can dream up. It's wild how easily people say these relationships can develop.

In 2017, fresh off a PhD on theoretical chemistry, John Jumper heard rumors that Google DeepMind had moved on from building AI that played games with superhuman skill and was starting up a secret project to predict the structures of proteins. He applied for a job. Just three years later, Jumper celebrated a stunning win that few had seen coming. With CEO Demis Hassabis, he had co-led the development of an AI system called AlphaFold 2 that was able to predict the structures of proteins to within the width of an atom, matching the accuracy of painstaking techniques used in the lab, and doing it many times faster--returning results in hours instead of months. AlphaFold 2 had cracked a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology.
