Long the province of the ultra-wealthy, prenuptial agreements are being embraced by young people--including many who don't have all that much to divvy up. More than forty per cent of millennials and Gen Z-ers claim to have signed a prenup. Andrea Zevallos declared 2016 her "year of dating." She was twenty-seven, working at Universal Studios Hollywood, the theme park, and determined to find love. She calculated it would take three dates a week. By December, she was losing hope. "It was exhausting," she said. Then, while scrolling OkCupid, she noticed a "cute guy" with a "Hamilton" reference in his handle. His name was Alex Switzky, and like her he was a musical-theatre enthusiast and aspiring screenwriter. He was different from the other men she'd met. On their second date, he started planning a third. Zevallos "was used to L.A. guys cagey about any sort of calendar." One day, Switzky called her. Accustomed to texts, she assumed that he was about to break up with her. "The most millennial response," she recalled, laughing.
Bio-hybrid robots turn food waste into functional machines
Although many roboticists today turn to nature to inspire their designs, even bioinspired robots are usually fabricated from non-biological materials like metal, plastic and composites. But a new experimental robotic manipulator from the Computational Robot Design and Fabrication Lab ( CREATE Lab) in EPFL's School of Engineering turns this trend on its head: its main feature is a pair of langoustine abdomen exoskeletons. Although it may look unusual, CREATE Lab head Josie Hughes explains that combining biological elements with synthetic components holds significant potential not only to enhance robotics, but also to support sustainable technology systems. "Exoskeletons combine mineralized shells with joint membranes, providing a balance of rigidity and flexibility that allows their segments to move independently. These features enable crustaceans' rapid, high-torque movements in water, but they can also be very useful for robotics. And by repurposing food waste, we propose a sustainable cyclic design process in which materials can be recycled and adapted for new tasks."

Just this month: Ford announced a retrenchment in its EV business, canceling some battery-powered vehicle plans and delaying others; the European Commission proposed to backtrack its goal to transition fully to zero-emission cars by 2035; the US government said it would loosen rules that would have required automakers to ratchet up the fuel economy of their fleets. BloombergNEF projects 14 million fewer EVs will be sold in the US by 2030 than it did last year--a 20 percent drop.

Over the course of 2025, we had the pleasure of finding out more about a whole range of AI topics from researchers around the world. Here, we highlight some of our favourite interviews from the past 12 months. We caught up with Erica Kimei to find out about her research studying gas emissions from agriculture, specifically ruminant livestock. Erica combines machine learning and remote sensing technology to monitor and forecast such emissions. We spoke to Yuki Mitsufuji, Lead Research Scientist at Sony AI, to find out more about two pieces of research that his team presented at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024).
US and Ukraine call Miami talks productive despite no breakthrough
US and Ukrainian envoys say productive and constructive talks have taken place in Miami, but there still appears to be no major breakthrough in efforts to end Ukraine's war with Russia. Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, issued a joint statement with the top Ukrainian negotiator, Rustem Umerov, after three days of meetings with European allies. The pair said the meeting focused on aligning positions on a 20-point plan, a multilateral security guarantee framework, a US Security guarantee framework for Ukraine and an economic & prosperity plan. Separate talks have been taking place in Miami between the US and the Russian envoy, Kirill Dmitriev. Our shared priority is to stop the killing, ensure guaranteed security, and create conditions for Ukraine's recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity, Witkoff and Umerov said in a statement.
Towards Sharp Minimax Risk Bounds for Operator Learning

A new paradigm in machine learning for scientific computing is focused on designing learning algorithms and methods for continuum problems. This paradigm is referred to as operator learning and has received considerable interest in the last few years [5,7,18,20,23-25,27,30,34,36]. The basic task may be posed as learning a map between infinite-dimensional function spaces, i.e., learning an operator F: X Y, where, for example, X and Y are real, separable Hilbert spaces. Operator learning naturally arises in many scientific problems where one wants to learn how a continuum model, often described by partial differential equations (PDEs), maps inputs, such as parameters or boundary conditions, to outputs, such as states or observables. A prototypical example to keep in mind is learning parameter-to-solution maps of parametric PDEs [1,2,11]. In contrast to more classical surrogate modeling, which typically focuses on learning finite-dimensional parameter-to-solution maps for some fixed discretization, operator learning directly aims to learn/approximate the continuum map F: X Y itself. Thus, the inputs and outputs are functions (not vectors) and the goal is to directly design discretization-invariant methods [7,23]. From a statistical perspective, this naturally leads to a nonparametric regression problem in which both the object of interest (the operator) and the observations (finite number of noisy samples) are infinite-dimensional.
Imputation Uncertainty in Interpretable Machine Learning Methods

In real data, missing values occur frequently, which affects the interpretation with interpretable machine learning (IML) methods. Recent work considers bias and shows that model explanations may differ between imputation methods, while ignoring additional imputation uncertainty and its influence on variance and confidence intervals. We therefore compare the effects of different imputation methods on the confidence interval coverage probabilities of the IML methods permutation feature importance, partial dependence plots and Shapley values. We show that single imputation leads to underestimation of variance and that, in most cases, only multiple imputation is close to nominal coverage.
