Artificial Intelligence Comes to the Rescue for the Retail Industry

#artificialintelligence

Exponential progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, fuelled by the combination of cloud, big data and new algorithms, is transforming the retail industry. As AI leverages big data to automate, predict and personalize, retail is testing and implementing these applications to garner robust competitive advantages. The key focus for AI in retail is customer relationships. In times of concerns for the retail sector in the UK where sales posted biggest quarterly fall since 2010, the refashioning of this industry comes as a breath of fresh air with many opportunities to come. Global Artificial Intelligence Opportunities in Retail, 2017, new research from Frost & Sullivan's Connected Industries Growth Partnership Service, offers an overview of AI and its relevance to business in 2017.

Using AI, Predictive Analytics, and Recommendations - DZone Big Data

This is an overview of what a recommendation system in retail is and how we implemented it at a grocery chain. These days, recommendation systems empower social networks, healthcare, finance, and e-commerce. At the end of 2016, Starbucks announced that they will be implementing an AI-based recommendation system in their cafes all over the world. This means that predictive analytics has finally found its way into retail. Like e-commerce entrepreneurs, retailers can now send customers personalized offers based on their behavior.

Alibaba founder Jack Ma: AI will cause people 'more pain than happiness'

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence and other technologies will cause people "more pain than happiness" over the next three decades, according to Jack Ma, the billionaire chairman and founder of Alibaba. "Social conflicts in the next three decades will have an impact on all sorts of industries and walks of life," said Ma, speaking at an entrepreneurship conference in China about the job disruptions that would be created by automation and the internet. A key social conflict will be the rise of artificial intelligence and longer life expectancy, which will lead to an aging workforce fighting for fewer jobs. Ma, who is usually more optimistic in his presentations, issued the warning to encourage businesses to adapt or face problems in the future. He said that 15 years ago he gave hundreds of speeches warning about the impact of e-commerce on traditional retailers and few people listened because he wasn't as well-known as he is now.

Artificial Intelligence

It's been reckoned that about one third of large companies globally are using Artificial Intelligence as part of their marketing mechanics. The main goal of AI in this area is one of anticipating what customers will be buying in the short, medium and longer term โ€“ allowing special packages and promotions to be tailored to specific trends, on and offline. It also has the obvious advantages of improving media advertising placement, monitoring social media platforms and analysing brand loyalty. In essence, a strategy for informing what the buyer wants and when, which can enable dynamic pricing whilst at the same time vastly improving the automation of in-store or department selling function. AI is allowing clearer visibility into not only the retail sector, but is making its impact felt in the banking and telecom industries.

Amazon is interested in self-driving vehicles, too

Engadget

Amazon wants in on the action, too. Wall Street Journal sources hear that Amazon formed a small (roughly 12 people) team about a year ago to explore the possibilities of autonomous vehicles. This doesn't guarantee you'll see Amazon-made driverless vans roaming the streets, to be clear. Rather, the group is an "in-house think tank" looking at ways to take advantage of self-driving tech for the company's online shopping business. With that said, smarter delivery vehicles are a real possibility.

Want Nintendo's NES Classic? Better hurry to a Best Buy tomorrow

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

The company plans to ship its final batch of systems to retailers at the end of the month. Nintendo's NES Classic will be back, at least for one more day at Best Buy. As one would expect, Best Buy will only have "limited quantities" of the system available and the game console will only be available in stores. TOMORROW In Best Buy stores.

Dipayan Dev has completed his M.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Silchar with a first class first and is currently working as a software professional in Bengaluru, India. He has extensive knowledge and experience in non-relational database technologies, having primarily worked with large-scale data over the last few years. His core expertise lies in Hadoop Framework. During his postgraduation, Dipayan had built an infinite scalable framework for Hadoop, called Dr. Hadoop, which got published in top-tier SCI-E indexed journal of Springer. Dr. Hadoop has recently been cited by Goo Wikipedia in their Apache Hadoop article.

At Stitch Fix, data scientists and A.I. become personal stylists

#artificialintelligence

Professional stylists do the job for them and the personal shopping service ships the new clothes to their door. That combo is behind the success at Stitch Fix, a San Francisco-based online subscription and shopping service founded in 2011. "I think it's the single most salient aspect of our company," said Eric Colson, chief algorithms officer at Stitch Fix. "Our business is getting relevant things into the hands of our customers. This is the one thing we're going to be best in the world at. We couldn't do this with machines alone. We couldn't do this with humans alone. We're just trying to get them to combine their powers."

Tutorial: Using Amazon ML to Predict Responses to a Marketing Offer - Amazon Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

With Amazon Machine Learning (Amazon ML), you can build and train predictive models and host your applications in a scalable cloud solution. In this tutorial, we show you how to use the Amazon ML console to create a datasource, build a machine learning (ML) model, and use the model to generate predictions that you can use in your applications. Our sample exercise shows how to identify potential customers for a targeted marketing campaign, but you can apply the same principles to create and use a variety of ML models. To complete the sample exercise, you will use publicly available banking and marketing datasets from the University of California at Irvine (UCI) Machine Learning Repository. These datasets contain general information about customers, and information about how they responded to previous marketing contacts.
