Why AI Searches More Obsessively Than Shoppers PYMNTS.com
Retailers are rolling out new ways for consumers to look for items online. Forever 21, in particular, is moving beyond text-based online search for its customers with visual search. In an announcement for the feature, Forever 21 President Alex Ok said the technology "bridges the gap" between online and offline worlds, while enabling "customers to search for clothing in the same way they think about it -- using visuals, not words." Forever 21 is not alone in its efforts to integrate the latest in AI: A myriad of merchants are using the technology in new and exciting ways. Some retailers even possess the computing power and storage capacity to treat each customer as an individual rather than part of a segment.
Artificial intelligence: the opportunities and threats
Success in fashion retail was once predicated on having an instinct for the next big thing. But in an omnichannel, social media-saturated consumer environment, human powers of divination alone โ even those informed by trend forecasters โ are not enough. The best fashion businesses are increasingly combining human with artificial intelligence (AI) to improve customer service, identify consumer trends, offer greater personalisation and to ensure their supply chain is as responsive as it can be. Last month, Marks & Spencer announced it was replacing switchboard staff with AI technology to increase the speed it deals with customer complaints and queries. The system recognises human speech and routes calls to relevant departments, and will be used in all 640 M&S UK stores by the end of this month, as well as its 13 UK call centres.
Retail Analytics: A Guide for Growing Businesses [07/18 Update]
Retail analytics is a process that helps to provide crucial data for businesses with regards to inventory, sales, supply chain activities, consumer demand, and more. By implementing an analytics-driven retail environment, organizations can make better decisions for procurement, marketing, merchandising, and other operational considerations. This, in turn, enables retailers to create a better buying experience and for identifying opportunities for organizational improvement. What are the benefits and importance of retail analytics? What are some current trends in retail analytics?
Artificial intelligence threatens freedom more than jobs
Pessimists on the left tell us the unfolding revolution in mobile supercomputing, intelligent robotics, self-driving vehicles and the like will eliminate most middle class jobs, relegate the masses to waiting on tables and drive inequality to unconscionable dimensions. Don't worry, invest in a skills-based education and you will still be able to find good paying work -- the real threat is to your private thoughts and conscience. All these innovations are driven by artificial intelligence. Computer programs that can collect and process huge amounts of data at lightening speeds and most importantly, independently learn -- modify their own algorithms to better accomplish assigned goals. They can perform tasks as simple assembling and dispatching your next Amazon Prime shipment or as complex as providing your prospective in-laws with a detailed assessment of your future earnings prospects, political views, winning virtues and troubling faults.
Whisper to Alexa, and She'll Whisper Back : Alexa Blogs
If you're in a room where a child has just fallen asleep, and someone else walks in, you might start speaking in a whisper, to indicate that you're trying to keep the room quiet. The other person will probably start whispering, too. We would like Alexa to react to conversational cues in just such a natural, intuitive way, and toward that end, Amazon last week announced Alexa's new whisper mode, which will let Alexa-enabled devices respond to whispered speech by whispering back. At the IEEE Workshop on Spoken Language Technology, in December, my colleagues and I will present a paper that describes the techniques we used to enable whisper mode. The ultimate implementation differs somewhat, but the basic principles are the same.
How Machine Learning is reshaping Price Optimization Tryolabs Blog
Setting the right price for a good or service is an old problem in economic theory. There are a vast amount of pricing strategies that depend on the objective sought. One company may seek to maximize profitability on each unit sold or on the overall market share, while another company needs to access a new market or to protect an existing one. In this blog post, we'll present the problem of price optimization for retail โ which has its own particularities โ and how retailers can take advantage of the tremendous power of Machine Learning (ML) technology to build effective solutions. Given that in these days it is very easy for a customer to compare prices thanks to online catalogs, specialized search tools or collaborative platforms, retailers must pay close attention to several parameters when setting prices.

Amazon Echo (2nd generation) -- Alexa Speaker
Let me preface this review by revealing a few facts about myself. I am male, aged 75 years old, and more tech savvy than most people my age, but if you can use a modern computer, and own one, you should have not problem using this device. IT IS SO FAR, MIRACULOUS, and intriguing! I bought mine about a week ago, and waited till a couple days ago to jump in with "both feet" and set it up. Even though I once did computer tech support for Dell computers, It was a long time ago now, and a lot of tech has evolved since then, and i have the same fear of new things as most people my age, though admittedly higher skills.
Artificial Intelligence for Retail Shelf Monitoring
Latest advancement in AI technology and deep learning algorithms are changing the retail industry. AI will help in recognizing product conditions on shelf such as availability, assortments, space, pricing, promotions and many more. It will empower companies to take immediate corrective. AI algorithms can definitely improve planogram compliance by providing accurate stock visibility insights. Companies will be able to monitor and benchmark duration of out of stock instances, which will lead to better in-store product placement. Not much will change in the daily routine of the field agents apart from the fact that they will have more flexibility in terms of quality of pictures that they have to share with the analysis team.
Amazon's new gadgets are just another data-collection scheme
To use the title of Brad Stone's seminal book about the nation's largest online retailer, Amazon is so much "The Everything Store" that it can be a little hard to remember when it was just a bookstore. But Jeff Bezos' ambitions are actually the grandest in the land, and the dozen-plus Alexa devices the company announced today show the next step. Throughout tech history, incumbents have needed to beware of leapfroggers. Apple never needed to defend a dumb-phone business, so it could upend smartphones. T-Mobile had no landline thinking, so it could become the UnCarrier.
