Amazon's own 'Machine Learning University' now available to all developers Amazon Web Services

#artificialintelligence

Today, I'm excited to share that, for the first time, the same machine learning courses used to train engineers at Amazon are now available to all developers through AWS. We've been using machine learning across Amazon for more than 20 years. With thousands of engineers focused on machine learning across the company, there are very few Amazon retail pages, products, fulfillment technologies, stores which haven't been improved through the use of machine learning in one way or another. Many AWS customers share this enthusiasm, and our mission has been to take machine learning from something which had previously been only available to the largest, most well-funded technology companies, and put it in the hands of every developer. Thanks to services such as Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Rekognition, Amazon Comprehend, Amazon Transcribe, Amazon Polly, Amazon Translate, and Amazon Lex, tens of thousands of developers are already on their way to building more intelligent applications through machine learning.

We will continue to update this list as we learn about new deals, and cross out links that no longer offer the promised discount, or sell out.

Will AI Remove Hiring Bias?

#artificialintelligence

If you've been following the latest hiring trends, you may have noticed that many recruiters are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) tools to tackle discrimination in hiring―and the expectations for success are high. However, HR technology analysts and even executives at companies offering AI solutions caution that a totally bias-free hiring process may be difficult to achieve. Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, found out the hard way. In 2015, the company discovered that a recruiting system it was building with machine-learning algorithms had begun to downgrade certain resumes that included words such as "women's club." By contrast, the system favored male candidates to whom such verbs such as "executed" and "captured" were attributed.

How Deep Learning Solves Retail Forecasting Challenges

#artificialintelligence

We've all seen the impact of being data-obsessed in the retail industry. While Amazon shapes the future of its business and the industry at large using insights gleaned from troves of data, many retailers are struggling to implement a data-driven mindset across the organization. Artificial intelligence is the key to unleashing value from retail datasets, particularly those used to forecast future demand. Accurate forecasts are critical for retailers (and the industries that rely on them for distribution, like consumer packaged goods) as they depend on these predictions for revenue and operational management. Forecast too much demand and you'll be left with excess inventory, while a short-sided forecast can leave the consumer empty-handed.

In era of online retail, Black Friday still lures American crowds

The Japan Times

NEW YORK – It would have been easy to turn on their computers at home over plates of leftover turkey and take advantage of the Black Friday deals most retailers now offer online. But across the country, thousands of shoppers flocked to stores on Thanksgiving or woke up before dawn the next day to take part in this most famous ritual of American consumerism. Shoppers spent their holiday lined up outside the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, by 4 p.m. Thursday, and the crowd had swelled to 3,000 people by the time doors opened at 5 a.m. In Ohio, a group of women was so determined, they booked a hotel room Thursday night to be closer to the stores. In New York City, one woman went straight from a dance club to a department store in the middle of the night.
