You've got a video, and it's fake! - Delhi Post

#artificialintelligence

Technology, internet in particular, has enabled the democratization of information and news. But it has come with a price. Or this: a video in which Mukesh Ambani makes a calamitous-worthy announcement, sending the stock market into a tizzy and shareholders scurrying to save their asses. These two instances are not slices from a dystopian fictional account, but could be possible, thanks to the disruptive powers of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The marriage between news dissemination and technology has already led to the unwitting and disastrous birth of fake news.

Madame Tussaud's swaps wax for silicon as it unveils first intelligent robot

#artificialintelligence

Since Madame Tussaud first toured her collection of waxworks in the late 18th century, the famous faces on show have remained steadfastly static. But a new generation of animatronic models which identify and interact with visitors are on the horizon after the Shanghai branch took delivery of its first robotic celebrity. A life-like robot of Chinese superstar Jing Boran of Monster Hunt and his CGI companion Wuba have been created by Cornish robotics firm Engineered Arts, the same team which animated King Kong's face in the film Kong: Skull Island. It is Madame Tussaud's first intelligent figure which not only moves but senses people and changes its behaviour based on its surroundings.

An Intro to Natural Language Processing in Python: Framing Text Classification in Familiar Terms

#artificialintelligence

Natural language processing (NLP) is a broad field encompassing many different tasks such as text search, translation, named entity recognition, and topic modeling. On a daily basis, we use NLP whenever we search the internet, ask a voice assistant to tell us the weather forecast, or translate web pages written in another language. Businesses use NLP to understand how their customers talk about their product on social media. NLP may even help you receive better healthcare, as the healthcare industry applies it to electronic health records to better understand patients. A core concern in NLP is how to best represent text data so that a computer can make use of it.

The Executive Guide to Data Science and Machine Learning

@machinelearnbot

A lot of jargon is thrown around within data science departments and in the leading business news sites these days, and there's a big hiring scramble across industries to develop advanced analytics to aid in decision-making. But what is important to know as an executive? While data science and the data economy are rapidly emerging and evolving fields, much of the work and new developments related to these fields fall into a few general principles and concepts. This guide aims to provide a short overview of key data-related topics and terms commonly used in data science today along with examples of how they are used in data science. Big data is a catch-all term for data that is large enough to cause issues in storage and analysis, marked by high volumes (lots of records), high degree of variety (text data, video data, and numerical data together), velocity (streaming data), and veracity (quality of data).

With 'Fortnite: Battle Royale' Crossing Over With Marvel, Could Star Wars Be Next?

Forbes - Tech

Players have been enjoying Fortnite's surprise crossover with Avengers: Infinity War where Thanos has invaded the game for a limited time mode. While the event didn't end up selling any Avengers-themed skins (and for reasons that make sense, as I've argued), what it has done is open the door for future licensed crossovers, given that we know Fortnite is now open to them. The Marvel Cinematic Universe might be the biggest pop culture phenomenon in the world right now (with Fortnite itself possibly a close second), but what's also high up on the list? And that franchise just so happens to be owned by the same company who agreed to do the Marvel deal with Epic, Disney. While the Avengers will surely not be the last Fortnite crossover, I do have to wonder if Star Wars could be next on the to-do list.

Filmmaker captures heartbreaking images of albatrosses killed by plastic on a remote Pacific island

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A filmmaker has captured heartbreaking images of albatrosses killed by plastic on a remote Pacific island. Decaying birds are shown with their stomachs full of plastic waste while young chicks are pictured surroundeded by debris. One picture shows a young bird with its neck folded into its back while seemingly still living in the nest where it was born. The snaps shine a light on the plastic pollution that has killed tens of thousands of birds on the island, which sits 2,000 miles (3,200km) from the nearest continent. American photographer and filmmaker Chris Jordan said he hopes the shocking pictures force people to emotionally engage with the problems plastic is causing on a global scale.

Your Spotify History Could Help Predict What's Going On With The Economy

International Business Times

The Bank of England's chief economist, Andy Haldane, has urged his colleagues to examine the musical mood of the nation when contemplating changes to the Bank's interest rate. How could an increase in Taylor Swift downloads or a decline in the popularity of rock and roll be relevant for managing the economy? It all comes down to measuring economic sentiment. This is a way of gauging how people feel about the economy, which behavioural economists use to make predictions about how it will respond to different policies. For example, if people are generally pessimistic about the economy then raising interest rates might encourage them to stop borrowing and spending by so much that it harms the economy.

Google Home finally works with its own Play Movies service

Engadget

Google Assistant can now finally beam Play Movies to a Chromecast when you issue voice commands through the tech giant's Home speaker. It's weird how that hasn't been available until now when Home has been able to recognize spoken commands to stream Netflix shows from the start. Thankfully, the tech giant has fixed the oversight and quietly announced the integration at its annual I/O conference. And from the sound of things, the feature has already started rolling out to users. Trent Archer told Android Police that he's already able to play movies through Google Home -- as you can see in his video above, he tells Assistant through the speaker to play Bourne Ultimatum.
