[D] Simple Questions Thread August 30, 2020

#artificialintelligence

Sorry for yet another "which GPU to buy" -post, but I have a hard time deciding and would like to hear your opinion. I am building a PC that will be used for deep learning. In this price range the choice narrows down to either a second hand GTX 1080 Ti or a new RTX 2070 Super which I can buy for the same price (RTX 2070S is slightly cheaper). I am fairly new to deep learning and want to explore a range of different kinds of models. Therefore my focus is on a well-rounded GPU rather than optimizing for a specific type of networks.

7 Industries That Will Rely Heavily on AI in 2020 - Eightfold

#artificialintelligence

Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence is fast becoming a top concern for businesses. While initially the realm of tech companies, in 2020, AI adoption is spreading quickly to other industries. Four in 10 executives believe their companies already possess high-level capabilities to manage and maintain AI solutions. A quarter of the Fortune 500 are using AI to build intelligent process automation (IPA) capabilities to manage both the mundane tasks and tactical IPA projects, says Srividya Sridharan, VP and research director at Forrester. These seven industries currently are investing in artificial intelligence to improve processes and create new efficiencies.

50 exoplanets discovered in deep space by advanced artificial intelligence

FOX News

Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. More than 4,000 exoplanets have been discovered so far by astronomers. Now, artificial intelligence has discovered an additional 50, thanks to old data from NASA. Researchers built the algorithm to comb through old data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, which was retired in October 2018.

CIPR AI in PR ethics guide

#artificialintelligence

UK EDITION Ethics Guide to Artificial Intelligence in PR 2. The AIinPR panel and the authors are grateful for the endorsements and support from the following: In May 2020 the Wall Street Journal reported that 64 per cent of all signups to extremist groups on Facebook were due to Facebook's own recommendation algorithms. There could hardly be a simpler case study in the question of AI and ethics, the intersection of what is technically possible and what is morally desirable. CIPR members who find an automated/AI system used by their organisation perpetrating such online harms have a professional responsibility to try and prevent it. For all PR professionals, this is a fundamental requirement of the ability to practice ethically. The question is – if you worked at Facebook, what would you do? If you're not sure, this report guide will help you work out your answer. Alastair McCapra Chief Executive Officer CIPR Artificial Intelligence is quickly becoming an essential technology for ...

Soundbar shoppers: Consider these 10 essential features

PCWorld

Snapping up a feature-packed soundbar makes for the easiest way to boost your TV's crappy sound. We've rounded up 10 key things to look for when shopping for your next soundbar, from support for immersive 3D audio formats (like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X) and multi-room audio to a center channel and a night mode. Granted, it's tough to find a specific soundbar with all the features we've ticked off (and those that do come with price tags north of $1,500), but we'll give you an idea of the functionality you should expect to see in a soundbar at a given price point. If you don't want to wake your housemates while taking in a late-night movie, a soundbar with a night mode is essential. By compressing the dynamic range of the audio, a night mode allows you to turn the volume up high enough to hear the action without worrying about sudden, room-shaking explosions or ear-popping gunshots.

Automation, artificial intelligence to be central in the post-Covid world

#artificialintelligence

Traditional factory floor practices are being reconfigured as manufacturing companies increasingly adopt automation and artificial intelligence throughout value chains in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. "We are in an environment that is getting more and more volatile every day," said Siemens India MD Sunil Mathur, panelist at The Economic Times Back to Business Dialogues on the theme of Automating Business, Accelerating Growth. "At the same time, customers are becoming even more demanding. The challenge that most manufacturing companies are facing is how to balance these two." If procurement and retail are managed digitally, AI can analyse the data for better demand prediction.

Online Spatiotemporal Action Detection and Prediction via Causal Representations

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In this thesis, we focus on video action understanding problems from an online and real-time processing point of view. We start with the conversion of the traditional offline spatiotemporal action detection pipeline into an online spatiotemporal action tube detection system. An action tube is a set of bounding connected over time, which bounds an action instance in space and time. Next, we explore the future prediction capabilities of such detection methods by extending the an existing action tube into the future by regression. Later, we seek to establish that online/causal representations can achieve similar performance to that of offline three dimensional (3D) convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on various tasks, including action recognition, temporal action segmentation and early prediction.

Forrester names SAS a Leader in AI-Based text analytics platforms (document focused).

#artificialintelligence

According to Forrester, document capture options and mining text from images and cursive writing in multiple languages are key differentiators for document-focused enterprise text analytics platforms, which focus on longer documents, such as contracts, insurance claims, invoices, and purchase orders. The software helps users with sentiment analysis, trend analysis, data preparation and visualization and hybrid modeling approaches. The report states, "SAS Visual Text Analytics bolsters SAS' family of formidable analytics products. SAS Visual Text Analytics is one of [SAS'] several applications built on the SAS Viya platform, where all applications share data and model management, BI and analytics GUI and other microservices, resulting in consistent UX."

The search engine boss who wants to help us all plant trees

BBC News

This week we speak to Christian Kroll, the founder and chief executive of internet search engine Ecosia. Christian Kroll wants nothing less than to change the world. "I want to make the world a greener, better place," he says. "I also want to prove that there is a more ethical alternative to the kind of greedy capitalism that is coming close to destroying the planet." The 35-year-old German is the boss of search engine Ecosia, which has an unusual but very environmentally friendly business model - it gives away most of its profits to enable trees to be planted around the world. Founded by Christian in 2009, Ecosia makes its money in the same way as Google - from advertising revenues.
