A GPT-3-powered bot has been caught posing as a human on Reddit after more than a week of rampant posting on one of the site's most popular subreddits. Under the username of thegentlemetre, the bot had been churning out a post per minute on /r/AskReddit, a sub with more than 30 million users. That behavior raised the suspicions of writer Philip Winston. "I read through some of the posts and they reminded me of text I'd seen from OpenAI's language model GPT-3," Winston wrote on his blog. Winston shared his theory on the subreddit /r/GPT3. Another Redditor named Wiskkey noticed that the structure of its writing was similar to that used by the Philosopher AI, a controversial text generator powered by GPT-3.

Neural attention, especially the self-attention made popular by the Transformer, has become the workhorse of state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) models. Very recent work suggests that the self-attention in the Transformer encodes syntactic information; Here, we show that self-attention scores encode semantics by considering sentiment analysis tasks. In contrast to gradient-based feature attribution methods, we propose a simple and effective Layer-wise Attention Tracing (LAT) method to analyze structured attention weights. We apply our method to Transformer models trained on two tasks that have surface dissimilarities, but share common semantics---sentiment analysis of movie reviews and time-series valence prediction in life story narratives. Across both tasks, words with high aggregated attention weights were rich in emotional semantics, as quantitatively validated by an emotion lexicon labeled by human annotators. Our results show that structured attention weights encode rich semantics in sentiment analysis, and match human interpretations of semantics.

In a lot of ways, smart speakers are the ideal home stereo for the streaming music generation. Telling an Amazon Echo to play whatever song was on your mind for the first time was a bit of a revelation. And music remains one of the most-used and most crucial features of any smart speaker. Sonos, Google, Apple and Amazon all have smart speakers where music quality is paramount, but a $200 Echo Studio or Sonos one is a tough sell next to a $50 Echo Dot or Nest Mini.

The music you listen to can indicate your personality type, a study claims, with country fans more extroverted and blues lovers more emotionally stable. Spotify asked 5,808 volunteers to complete a personality test that rates them on openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and emotional stability. It then looked at their musical history and found that the songs people listened to could predict their personality type with'moderate to high accuracy'. For example, people who like Aretha Franklin and soul music generally tend to be more agreeable, and lovers of folk music are more likely to be open. Spotify was this week granted a patent for technology that uses personality types to'personalise user experience' by changing the tone of voice used in spoken messages delivered within the service.

At its best, the Chromecast with Google TV represents how streaming is supposed to work. You shouldn't have to sift through a dozen apps--Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney, HBO Max, and so on--just to figure out what to watch.
