Women are making strides in artificial intelligence but are still underrepresented, according to new Concordia research

The growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry worldwide -- and Canada specifically -- has revealed that its female researchers face many of the same challenges as they do in the other science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Underrepresentation, lower hiring rates and limited professional opportunities are all ongoing barriers. However, that may be changing, according to a new study published in the Journal of Informetrics. The authors present an analysis of gender patterns that evolved in the AI field over two decades, from 2000 to 2019. They used social network analysis, natural language processing, statistical analysis and machine learning to examine the space women occupy and the nature of their work in this ever-evolving and increasingly diverse field.

At the recent EmTech Digital conference hosted by MIT Technology Review, machine learning experts from Wayfair and Spotify gave a peek at how they leverage technology to deliver bespoke experiences that foster lasting and profitable customer relationships. At Wayfair, more than 3,000 technologists work on the platform, which connects customers with suppliers in a marketplace of more than 14 million products spanning five websites.

Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of sheet-image-based on-line audio-to-score alignment also known as score following. Drawing inspiration from object detection, a conditional neural network architecture is proposed that directly predicts x,y coordinates of the matching positions in a complete score sheet image at each point in time for a given musical performance. Experiments are conducted on a synthetic polyphonic piano benchmark dataset and the new method is compared to several existing approaches from the literature for sheet-image-based score following as well as an Optical Music Recognition baseline. Abstract: Annotating a large-scale in-the-wild person re-identification dataset especially of marathon runners is a challenging task. The variations in the scenarios such as camera viewpoints, resolution, occlusion, and illumination make the problem non-trivial.

The Best Sci-Fi TV Shows on Netflix

Netflix has an excellent international library, including German sci-fi gem Dark -- one of the best series on Netflix full stop. This adult animated anthology series spans a range of genres, with plenty of episodes hitting the Black Mirror comparison button. Robots in a post-apocalyptic city, farmers piloting mech suits and a space mission gone wrong all pop up in the first season. While the episodes can be hit and miss (some have been criticized for their treatment of women), you'll find plenty of thought-provoking and impressive animation. This apocalyptic sci-fi from Belgium will probably turn you off from flying any time soon.
