Digital Economy Bill passed by MPs, forcing people to ask if they want to watch porn

The Independent - Tech

The House of Commons has passed a Bill that forces people to ask to be allowed to see porn and bans many sex acts from appearing in adult videos. The Digital Economy Bill received an unopposed third reading from MPs, meaning that it is on its way to becoming law. As such, it will force pornographic websites to add age verification checks that won't let people watch videos until they sign up to a special verification programme. It will also put into law new rules that will allow videos depicting unusual practices from adult websites. That clause, which provoked anger this week, bans anything from being made available online in the UK that wouldn't be allowed on a commercially available DVD.

Trump, artificial intelligence and India

#artificialintelligence

Written by C. Raja Mohan Updated: November 29, 2016 12:18 am Two themes of Donald Trump's deeply disruptive presidential campaign resonated with the American people. One was to put America to work again by bringing jobs back and the other was to make the US military the most powerful and feared in the world again. Both would involve dealing with new technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, robotics and bioengineering -- often described as constituting the "fourth industrial revolution". The fusion of the cyber and the physical is indeed transforming the economic and security landscape in the world. Delhi, which has had little debate on the unfolding strategic implications of the fourth industrial revolution, must now begin to pay attention.

Microsoft Created A Censoring Chatbot For China That Won't Talk About Trump

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft's Chinese-speaking chatbot refuses to talk about issues deemed sensitive by the Chinese government, reportedly by design. Xiaobing or Xiaoice, as Microsoft officially calls its chatbot, has become extremely popular since it was launched two years ago. Over 40 million users chat with Xiaoice on Chinese social media platforms WeChat and Weibo every day. For many lonely men across China, Microsoft's chatbot has become a virtual girlfriend, with a quarter of regular users expressing love for the artificial intelligence platform, reports CNN. Xiaoice can mimic real conversations, but if users desire to talk to her about President-elect Donald Trump, Tiananmen Square, the Communist Party, the Dalai Lama (Tibetan spiritual leader), or Chinese President Xi Jinping, they may be out of luck.

A.I. Powered Civil Servants Could Take Over the Government

#artificialintelligence

Until robots reach some kind of full consciousness, nobody feels bad about not paying them. That's why austerity-focused governments are on a collision course with replacing civil servants with automated workers to cut costs: We're talking robo-cops, robo-firefighters, robo-mailmen. If artificial intelligence gets good enough to take private-sector jobs, there's little to stop it from driving a technological revolution that could leave government services unrecognizable. For the past six years, the British Conservative Party has been pursuing an austerity program to cut the deficit, slashing funds for local services and reducing staff numbers in the public sector. A recent report, published in October by Oxford University and Deloitte, suggests the government could go much further: over 850,000 public sector jobs could be lost to automation by the year 2030.

Donald Trump's anti-immigrant stance is making Indian tech companies reluctant to hire homegrown engineers

#artificialintelligence

Indian engineers could be hurt in more ways than one by US president-elect Donald Trump's promise to bring back jobs for Americans. From the early days of his campaign, Trump's anti-immigrant stance has included plans to cut down on work visas, known as H-1B, that allow skilled foreign workers to work full-time in the US for at least six years. In March, the real estate mogul said, if elected, he would "end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labour program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program." His attorney general pick, Senator Jeff Sessions, has long advocated clipping the program. If H-1B visa allocations are limited under a Trump presidency, it would be bad news for Indians who have been the recipients of the highest number (pdf) of such visas all these years.

Hurry up and bar Tesla from using the Autopilot name in marketing, consumer group tells DMV

Los Angeles Times

The California Department of Motor Vehicles put forth proposed regulations that would, in effect, prohibit Tesla from using the Autopilot name to market its vehicles. Now, a consumer group is telling the DMV to get on with it. Tesla uses the word Autopilot to describe its driver-assist technology, which, when enabled, automatically steers, brakes and passes other vehicles. Consumer Watchdog, based in Santa Monica, contends Tesla is misleading consumers by exaggerating Autopilot's capabilities. The DMV should "enact a regulation protecting consumers from misleading advertising that leaves the dangerous -- and sometimes fatal -- impression that a car is more capable of driving itself than is actually the case," John M. Simpson, privacy policy director at Consumer Watchdog, said in a Nov. 23 letter to the agency's director, Jean Shiomoto.
