The Odds are Odd: A Statistical Test for Detecting Adversarial Examples

We investigate conditions under which test statistics exist that can reliably detect examples, which have been adversarially manipulated in a white-box attack. These statistics can be easily computed and calibrated by randomly corrupting inputs. They exploit certain anomalies that adversarial attacks introduce, in particular if they follow the paradigm of choosing perturbations optimally under p-norm constraints. Access to the log-odds is the only requirement to defend models. We justify our approach empirically, but also provide conditions under which detectability via the suggested test statistics is guaranteed to be effective. In our experiments, we show that it is even possible to correct test time predictions for adversarial attacks with high accuracy.

JANICE S. AIKINS Dr. Aikins received her Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 1980. She is currently a research computer scientist at IBM's Palo Alto Scientific Center. She specializes in designing systems with an emphasis on the explicit representation of control knowledge in expert systems. ROBERT L. BLUM Dr. Blum received his M.D. from the University of California Medical School at San Francisco in 1973. From 1973 to 1976 he did an internship and residency in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, California, where he was chief resident in 1976.
4 Experts Respond to Trump's Executive Order on AI
Yesterday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing the American AI Initiative, with the aim of "accelerating our national leadership" in artificial intelligence. "Americans have profited tremendously from being the early developers and international leaders in AI. However, as the pace of AI innovation increases around the world, we cannot sit idly by and presume that our leadership is guaranteed." IEEE Spectrum asked four experts for their take on the announcement. Several saw it as a response to China's AI policy, which calls for major investment in order to make China the world leader in AI by 2030.

The executive order directs federal agencies to prioritize and set aside funding for AI programs, while opening up the way for researchers and developers to access more government data. "Continued American leadership in Artificial Intelligence is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States," Trump said in a statement, accompanying the order. The order directs all federal agencies to look into launching and expanding AI initiatives that promote their missions. The order also asks a coalition of government bodies to develop a set of national "regulatory" standards around AI, which the U.S. currently lacks.
Sonar drone discovers long-lost WWII aircraft carrier USS Hornet
The late Paul Allen's research vessel, the Petrel, has found another historic warship at the bottom of the ocean. In the wake of an initial discovery in late January, the expedition crew has confirmed that it found the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier that played a pivotal role in WWII through moments like the Doolittle Raid on Japan and the pivotal Battle of Midway. It was considered lost when it sank at the Battle of Santa Cruz in October 1943, but modern technology spotted it nearly 17,500 feet below the surface of the South Pacific Ocean, near the Solomon Islands. The team initially narrowed down its search area by using data from the era, such as action reports and deck logs from other ships involved in the Santa Cruz fight. From there, tech took over.
The US plans to launch swarms of attack drones from robo-submarines
Individually, these drones can't do much damage, but as a swarm they are hard to defend against. They can carry explosives or electronic jammers capable of knocking out a radar system or other sensors. This is the plan for LOCUST, the US Navy's low-cost, swarming technology, which has just been revealed in Pentagon documents.
DARPA wants smart bandages for wounded warriors
Nowhere is prompt and effective medical treatment more important than on the battlefield, where injuries are severe and conditions dangerous. DARPA thinks that outcomes can be improved by the use of intelligent bandages and other systems that predict and automatically react to the patient's needs. Ordinary cuts and scrapes just need a bit of shelter and time and your amazing immune system takes care of things. But soldiers not only receive far graver wounds, but under complex conditions that are not just a barrier to healing but unpredictably so. DARPA's Bioelectronics for Tissue Regeneration program, or BETR, will help fund new treatments and devices that "closely track the progress of the wound and then stimulate healing processes in real time to optimize tissue repair and regeneration." "Wounds are living environments and the conditions change quickly as cells and tissues communicate and attempt to repair," said Paul Sheehan, BETR program manager, in a DARPA news release.
Will Trump's New Artificial Intelligence Initiative Make The U.S. The World Leader In AI?
The tech world got a surprise on Monday when a senior administration official for the Trump administration announced during a telephone briefing that the President would be signing an executive order that would create an American AI Initiative designed to dedicate resources and funnel investments into research on artificial intelligence (AI). The order, titled Accelerating America's Leadership in Artificial Intelligence, "will direct agencies to prioritize AI investments in research and development, increase access to federal data and models for that research and prepare workers to adapt to the era of AI." While an obvious concern is funding for these innovations, no announcements have been made about the specific financial resources that will become available to the new program. Aside from how it will be paid for, we also currently lack information on how the government intends to structure or re-structure resources, who, exactly, they intend to call on for this effort (other than "federal agencies"), or how soon we should expect to see things take shape. Of course, Congress will ultimately decide how much money the program gets.
