NASA's impressive new AI can predict when a hurricane intensifies
Meteorologists have gotten pretty damn good at forecasting a hurricane's track. But they still struggle to calculate when it will intensify, as it's seriously hard to understand what's happening inside a tropical cyclone. A new machine learning model developed by NASA could dramatically improve their calculations, and give people in a hurricane's path more time to prepare. Scientists at the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California developed the system after searching through years of satellite data. They discovered three strong signals that a hurricane will become more severe: abundant rainfall inside the storm's inner core; the amount of ice water in the clouds within the tropical cyclone; and the temperature of the air flowing away from the eye of the hurricane. The team then used IBM Watson Studio to build a model that analyzes all these factors, as well as those already used by the National Hurricane Center, a US government agency that monitors hazardous tropical weather.

NIST benchmarks show facial recognition technology still struggles to identify Black faces
Every few months, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) releases the results of benchmark tests it conducts on facial recognition algorithms submitted by companies, universities, and independent labs. A portion of these tests focus on demographic performance -- that is, how often the algorithms misidentify a Black man as a white man, a Black woman as a Black man, and so on. Stakeholders are quick to say that the algorithms are constantly improving with regard to bias, but a VentureBeat analysis reveals a different story. In fact, our findings cast doubt on the notion that facial recognition algorithms are becoming better at recognizing people of color. That isn't surprising, as numerous studies have shown facial recognition algorithms are susceptible to bias.

Interventions of all kinds, from art groups to yoga, have been shown to improve residents' mood and mental state, at least temporarily. Most of these interventions clearly have their own intrinsic value, but what most studies fail to account for is the grim and barren social environment that residents too commonly inhabit. Field work has shown that loneliness, isolation and a lack of human interaction is all too common within care homes. These places are generally understaffed and this is the result of chronic underfunding of the care sector.

'We lost everything': Thousands homeless as Sudan battles floods
Wading through waist-deep water, residents of the al-Shigla neighbourhood in Omdurman, twin city of Sudan's capital Khartoum, tried to rescue what was left of their possessions as they floated by. Others stood by in despair, observing the aftermath of days of torrential rains that brought record-breaking flash floods to the country where the Blue and White Niles join to become the Nile River. Pieces of furniture, broken tiles, damaged vehicles and more were washed away by this year's rain that fell profusely and continuously for nearly two weeks. The rain and flooding exceeded records set in 1946 and 1988, killing more than 100 people and forcing the government to declare a three-month state of emergency this week. To many Sudanese like Amna Ahmed, seasonal rains, in and of themselves, are nothing new.
Big bad data: We don't trust AI to make good decisions
The UK government's recent technological mishaps has seemingly left a bitter taste in the mouth of many British citizens. A new report from the British Computer Society (BCS), the Chartered Institute for IT, has now revealed that more than half of UK adults (53%) don't trust organisations that use algorithms to make decisions about them. The survey, conducted with more than 2,000 respondents, comes in the wake of a tumultuous summer, shaken by student uproar after it emerged that the exam regulator Ofqual used an unfair algorithm to predict A-level and GCSE results, after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented exams from taking place. Ofqual's algorithm effectively based predictions on schools' previous performances, leading to significant downgrades in results that particularly affected state schools, while favoring private schools. The government promptly backtracked and allowed students to adopt teacher-predicted grades rather than algorithm-based results.
