Canada: A new fund dedicated to artificial intelligence to accelerate applied research capacity - Actu IA
The New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) is an independent funding corporation. In January, Jeff White, its CEO, Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA, and Jenica Atwin, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, officially launched the new "NBIF Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fund". The objective of the Fund is to bring together academic researchers and companies to collaborate. New Brunswick is a Canadian province of about 750,000 inhabitants, located south of Quebec, on the Atlantic coast. Artificial intelligence is, as in Canada (and all developed countries), considered a major strategic asset for economic growth, employment and innovation.
How Machine Learning can be Fair and Accurate - ELE Times
Carnegie Mellon University researchers are challenging a long-held assumption that there is a trade-off between accuracy and fairness when using machine learning to make public policy decisions. As the use of machine learning has increased in areas such as criminal justice, hiring, health care delivery and social service interventions, concerns have grown over whether such applications introduce new or amplify existing inequities, especially among racial minorities and people with economic disadvantages. To guard against this bias, adjustments are made to the data, labels, model training, scoring systems and other aspects of the machine learning system. The underlying theoretical assumption is that these adjustments make the system less accurate. A CMU team aims to dispel that assumption in a new study, Rayid Ghani, a professor in the School of Computer Science's Machine Learning Department and the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy; Kit Rodolfa, a research scientist in ML; and Hemank Lamba, a post-doctoral researcher in SCS, tested that assumption in real-world applications and found the trade-off was negligible in practice across a range of policy domains.

Composing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) of operations that respect physical symmetries has been suggested to give better model performance with a smaller number of learnable parameters. However, real-world applications, such as in high energy physics have not born this out. We present the novel architecture VecNet that combines both symmetry-respecting and unconstrained operations to study and tune the degree of physics-informed GNNs. We introduce a novel metric, the \textit{ant factor}, to quantify the resource-efficiency of each configuration in the search-space. We find that a generalized architecture such as ours can deliver optimal performance in resource-constrained applications.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technologies are becoming increasingly popular for detecting cyber assaults in a variety of computer settings, and several efforts have been made to secure various systems. The present AI systems are being exposed and vanquished because of the recent emergence of sophisticated adversarial systems such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). Great, DARPA Just Flew a Black Hawk Helicopter With Nobody In It
The United States military just inched one step closer to bringing autonomous helicopters to the battlefield. Like most strange feats of advanced military technology, this one comes from The Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, better known simply as "DARPA." On Tuesday, DARPA said a UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter outfitted with its experimental Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) system safely completed a test flight without anyone in the chopper. The 30-minute test flight occurred over the weekend above a U.S. Army installation at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. DARPA describes its Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) as a "tailorable, drop-in, removable kit," meant to add sophisticated automation to pre-built aircraft at a fraction of the cost of upgrading individual models with new, advanced avionics and software.

New company run by former NASA leader aims to build robotic outpost near the Moon
A new startup run by a former acting NASA administrator hopes to capitalize on the recent zeal for lunar space exploration by building robotic outposts and spacecraft to send to space near the Moon. Their goal is to create a fleet of robotic helpers that can do a variety of tasks near the Moon, such as providing internet capabilities, collecting data, refueling spacecraft, and assembling structures in lunar space. The company called Quantum Space was formed in 2021. At the helm is Steve Jurczyk, who served as NASA's associate administrator beginning in 2018, before becoming the agency's acting administrator when President Biden was inaugurated. After retiring in May, Jurczyk decided to team up with three additional entrepreneurs and experts in the space industry to create this new company based out of Maryland.
Musk Pushes The Boundaries In Tesla Autonomous Campaign
Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk often touts the arrival of completely autonomous vehicles as imminent, but exactly how close that future is for the electric automaker remains murky. Meanwhile, the company is launching new features in a US regulatory environment that has often taken a laissez-faire approach to emerging technologies, while using terms like Full Self Driving (FSD) that critics view as misleading. Videos posted online by Tesla owners show an erratic performance in "FSD Beta," the latest update on Tesla's driver-assistance system. Cars can be seen turning awkwardly, knocking down safety cones and lurching unexpectedly. Earlier this month, Tesla initiated a recall of some 54,000 vehicles equipped with FSD Beta to disable a feature that had allowed the cars to go through a stop sign without fully halting in certain situations. The episode highlights a downside to Musk's envelope-pushing approach, which has also been credited with making electric vehicles a mainstream option in the United States and other markets.
