Bayesian polynomial neural networks and polynomial neural ordinary differential equations

Symbolic regression with polynomial neural networks and polynomial neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are two recent and powerful approaches for equation recovery of many science and engineering problems. However, these methods provide point estimates for the model parameters and are currently unable to accommodate noisy data. We address this challenge by developing and validating the following Bayesian inference methods: the Laplace approximation, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling methods, and variational inference. We have found the Laplace approximation to be the best method for this class of problems. Our work can be easily extended to the broader class of symbolic neural networks to which the polynomial neural network belongs.


Decoding ChatGPT: A Taxonomy of Existing Research, Current Challenges, and Possible Future Directions

Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) has gained significant interest and attention since its launch in November 2022. It has shown impressive performance in various domains, including passing exams and creative writing. However, challenges and concerns related to biases and trust persist. In this work, we present a comprehensive review of over 100 Scopus-indexed publications on ChatGPT, aiming to provide a taxonomy of ChatGPT research and explore its applications. We critically analyze the existing literature, identifying common approaches employed in the studies. Additionally, we investigate diverse application areas where ChatGPT has found utility, such as healthcare, marketing and financial services, software engineering, academic and scientific writing, research and education, environmental science, and natural language processing. Through examining these applications, we gain valuable insights into the potential of ChatGPT in addressing real-world challenges. We also discuss crucial issues related to ChatGPT, including biases and trustworthiness, emphasizing the need for further research and development in these areas. Furthermore, we identify potential future directions for ChatGPT research, proposing solutions to current challenges and speculating on expected advancements. By fully leveraging the capabilities of ChatGPT, we can unlock its potential across various domains, leading to advancements in conversational AI and transformative impacts in society.


Overcoming Adversarial Attacks for Human-in-the-Loop Applications

Including human analysis has the potential to positively affect the robustness of Deep Neural Networks and is relatively unexplored in the Adversarial Machine Learning literature. Neural network visual explanation maps have been shown to be prone to adversarial attacks. Further research is needed in order to select robust visualizations of explanations for the image analyst to evaluate a given model. These factors greatly impact Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) evaluation tools due to their reliance on adversarial images, including explanation maps and measurements of robustness. We believe models of human visual attention may improve interpretability and robustness of human-machine imagery analysis systems. Our challenge remains, how can HITL evaluation be robust in this adversarial landscape?


Turkish attacks kills 7 PKK members in Iraq as delegation visits KRG

Turkish drone attacks in northern Iraq have killed seven members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), authorities said, as the country's foreign minister met the president and prime minister of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). "A Turkish army drone struck a PKK vehicle, killing an official and two fighters", the KRG's counterterrorism services said on Thursday. The attack took place in Sidakan district, north of the regional capital Erbil. Later, the counter-terrorism services said that another drone strike in Sidakan had killed four PKK members, including two medical personnel. The PKK has fought a rebellion against Turkey since 1984, and has bases inside KRG territory.

The techlash phenomenon emerged in 2018, as many scandals erupted and Big Tech's reputation took several blows. Surveillance Capitalism was the meme of the day, and the media was hyperventilating about the "ethics crisis" in computing. In response, I wrotea in January 2019, "If society finds the surveillance business model offensive, then the remedy is public policy in the form of laws and regulations, rather than an ethics outrage." The reaction to my call for regulation of technology was a collective shrug. Today's meme is generative AI, and the debate is now about human extinction.

The first major gathering on the technology will bring together governments, leading AI firms and experts to discuss how its risks can be mitigated through internationally coordinated action. Sunak announced the summit on a trip to Washington in June amid fears that the technology's rapid advancement could spin out of control and concerns that existing safeguards would soon be outdated. Safety concerns are mounting after breakthroughs in generative AI, which can produce convincing text, images and even voice on command, with tech executives such as Elon Musk among those expressing alarm. In recent months the prime minister has changed his tone on the technology.

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are taking artificial intelligence to the next level -- by sending it into space disguised as a robotic snake. With the sun beating down on JPL's Mars Yard, the robot lifts its "head" off a glossy surface of faux ice to scan the world around it. It maps its surroundings, analyzes potential obstacles and chooses the safest path through a valley of fake boulders to the destination it has been instructed to reach. Once it has a plan in place, the 14-foot-long robot lowers its head, engages its 48 motors and slowly slithers forward. Its cautious movements are propelled by the clockwise or counterclockwise turns of the spiral connectors that link its 10 body segments, sending the cyborg in a specific direction.

On Wednesday night in Milwaukee, eight Republicans trailing Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential primary gathered for the cycle's first debate and, with a clear and united voice, denounced one man: Vivek Ramaswamy. With Trump running away with the race and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis behind him in a clear (if tenuous) second, it was somehow the 38-year-old Ramaswamy who took the most direct hits. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's was likely the most memorable: After two of Ramaswamy's high-energy, relentlessly locquacious answers, Christie described him as "a guy who sounds like ChatGPT." Former vice president Mike Pence made a glaringly condescending reference to Ramaswamy "learning on the job," to which the crowd responded with a deserved oooooh. The Super PAC that supports DeSantis called Ramaswamy a fraud on Twitter, while you can see former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's opinion of him expressed nonverbally above.
