Using Algorithms & Artificial Intelligence in Child Welfare

#artificialintelligence

This article is part of a series on the Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS), which states can build with federal funding help to replace an antiquated data and management process. As another barrier to bypass when it comes to adopting new technology for the Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS) legislation and Family First Prevention Services Act, let's take a moment to consider the role of algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) in child welfare. As a statistics professor there is nothing that drives me more bonkers than hearing people inflate -- if not fictionalize -- the power of their analysis. And quite honestly, from what I have heard from top-level administrators I have met with in recent months, I have a fear too many states are being misguided into thinking they can buy a CCWIS system equipped with some pre-programmed miraculous predictive abilities guaranteeing each youth's safe placement. If you have been reading this series of articles, as you probably have surmised, I think this accountability-driven change opportunity should be capitalized on in order to exceed your wildest dreams when it comes to caring for kids.

Microsoft will train 10,000 Indian engineers in artificial intelligence

In an attempt to skill Indian youths in Artificial Intelligence, Microsoft India has taken an initiative to train five lakh youths. The company aims to train five lakh youths in AI across the country and would set up AI labs in 10 universities. Additionally, the company plans to upskill 10,000 developers in emerging technology areas like AI, IoT, etc. Microsoft also started Intelligent Cloud Hub Program to equip research and higher education institutions with AI infrastructure, build curriculum and help both faculty and students to build their skills and expertise in cloud computing, data sciences, AI and IoT. Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India shares, "We believe AI will enable Indian businesses and more for India's progress, especially in education, skilling, healthcare, and agriculture. Microsoft also believes that it is imperative to build higher awareness and capabilities on security, privacy, trust, and accountability. This lyrics of this music video are actually educational and they serve as an introductory lecture on AI. This video also acts as a teaser trailer for my upcoming, free 3 month Data Science course for beginners titled "Data Lit" at School of AI (Jan 28 start date). That's what keeps me going. Sign up for the "Data Lit" course at School of AI: https://www.theschool.ai/courses/data... Want more education? Shoutout to my Wizards, this ones for you It started with hello world hello engineers And now we're, world-wide yo and this the premiere So u gotta sit down tight and let me teach you a lesson I call it intro to AI, this is my confession Lesson one starts simple gotta get that data Don't even mess with the thetas until we get that data And if we open the file, it might look like a haze, But if we keep it algorithmic we can set it ablaze Hello!

Generation AI

#artificialintelligence

In a multi-year initiative, the team will consult experts across relevant fields (ranging from psychology, to industrial design, to AI science, to technology law, etc.) through formal desk research (including a dedicated Masters course at UC Berkeley and an evidence review by Baker Mckenzie), phone interviews, workshops, etc. to fill in the gaps in evidence where it is most needed to further child rights in the context of the extremely far reaching, fast-paced, and in some cases unpredictable, development of AI technologies. We will strengthen our formal research with collected insights from children relaying their hopes, worries, and visions for how technology may impact their lives. Taken together, this work will inform sets of actionable, specific recommendations for governments, companies, and caregivers that we will stress test before striving to implement through strategic partnerships.

It's up to higher education to keep AI in check (opinion) Inside Higher Ed

#artificialintelligence

The ubiquity of mobile computing -- and rise of algorithms that determine what we watch, hear and experience -- is raising frequent, and perhaps well-founded, concerns about the disintermediation of humans from decision making. Chat bots respond to our most obscure queries in nanoseconds. Algorithms help us pick the perfect restaurant, partner or job candidate. Artificial intelligence, in particular, conjures fears of a dystopian future where Elon Musk's "demons" come for more than just our jobs. And on college campuses, worthy questions are being asked about the incongruity between higher education's mission and the rise of analytics that sort and filter students or faculty in ways that undermine higher education's promise -- and mission.

AI Curriculum Is Coming for K-12 At Last. What Will It Include? - EdSurge News

When Ayanna met Cozmo the robot, both she and the robot lit up. "it was like she met a new best friend," her Boys and Girls Club teacher James Carter said. And when Cozmo said her name, "she was so excited she didn't know what to do with herself." Even better, it was Ayanna who had programmed Cozmo to say it. Ayanna is one of roughly 50 kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania who are using a new artificial intelligence kit created by ReadyAI.

AI's Impact on Ed Tech -- Campus Technology

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence is making its way into a variety of education technologies. Here, vendors talk about their current and future work with AI in the higher education space. In 2015, when Georgia Institute of Technology professor Ashok Goel experimented with using an artificial intelligence-based teaching assistant called "Jill Watson" to answer students' questions in online forums, it opened a lot of eyes to the potential of AI on campus. But there remained a lot of well-founded skepticism about how algorithms would be deployed. For instance, in 2016 AdmitHub CEO Andrew Magliozzi contacted universities to ask if they would like to incorporate an AI chatbot into their recruitment and retention strategy.

Digital transformation in higher education: Big data and education intelligence platforms

#artificialintelligence

The accumulation of data in the college setting, plus better hardware and software for putting it to work, means the education community can now make better decisions, retain and educate students with greater success and position themselves for growth in a world of changing demographics, economics and environmental concerns. Here's a look at digital transformation in higher education, and how it is improving it. Kicking off Information Age's Digital Transformation month, we look at everything you need to know about what is digital transformation in business; the challenges, the technologies and above all, how to succeed There are two very big (and very old) problems with the communal learning environment -- the classroom -- that technology is slowly helping us solve. Artificial intelligence is already helping to bring both of these shortcomings of traditional education back into balance. Because colleges and universities increasingly use digital platforms to present course materials and facilitate exams, AI services could easily interface with these dashboards to provide professors and other faculty with detailed and highly useful information.
