Gesture Recognition: The Right Way to AI Interaction

This article introduces the research about the interactive ability of gesture recognition by the Tmall Genie M laboratory. The research covers the exploration of business and algorithms in gesture recognition, future applications, and prospects for the algorithms. "Gestures are the most natural form of human communication. Hardware is the only limitation that prevents us from controlling our devices well." Here, the hardware limitation refers to the need for additional depth sensors by traditional gesture recognition algorithms.


Feeding the world sustainably

A burst of technology in the 1960s--the Green Revolution--raised agricultural output significantly across developing economies. Since then, rising incomes have boosted protein consumption worldwide, and elevated new challenges: greenhouse-gas emissions from agriculture are increasing (more than a fifth of all emissions worldwide), while a host of practices, from waste to overfishing, threaten the sustainability of food supplies. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought these concerns to the fore: the disease has disrupted supply chains and demand, perversely increasing the amount of food waste in farms and fields while threatening food security for many. As agriculture gradually regains its footing, participants and stakeholders should be casting an eye ahead, to safeguarding food supplies against the potentially greater and more disruptive effects of climate change. Once again, innovation and advanced technologies could make a powerful contribution to secure and sustainable food production. For example, digital and biotechnologies could improve the health of ruminant livestock, requiring fewer methane-producing animals to meet the world's protein needs. Genetic technologies could play a supporting role by enabling the breeding of animals that produce less methane. Meanwhile, AI and sensors could help food processors sort better and slash waste, and other smart technologies could identify inedible by-products for reprocessing. Data and advanced analytics also could help authorities better monitor and manage the seas to limit overfishing--while enabling boat crews to target and find fish with less effort and waste.

Over the years I've gotten to work with a lot of different programming languages. I grew up on Basic and 6502 machine code. I learned Pascal in middle school and C in high school. I learned Perl, Scheme, Cobol, and Fortran in college. I've written books on x86 assembly language, JavaScript, and PHP.

Machine learning is definitely a confusing term. Is it AI or something different? Well, its actually a subset of AI (which, by the way, is a massive category). "Machine learning is a method of analyzing data using an analytical model that is built automatically, or'learned', from training data," said Rick Negrin, who is the VP of Product Management at MemSQL. "The idea is that the model gets better as you feed it more data points." There are two key steps with machine learning.

Becoming an 'Adaptive' Expert

In today's software development industry, jobs have become more cognitively complex and require workers who are more collaborative and creative in their problem-solving techniques.14 Employees also must be able to combine diverse specializations rather than just having routine knowledge in one domain.22 While the "hard" technical skills associated with programming remain a prerequisite for new hires, the industry also wants software developers who can readily demonstrate a range of so-called "soft" skills, including the capacity to communicate clearly, facilitate an open and inclusive workplace environment, and demonstrate the resiliency and flexibility to work on a range of tasks.24 Our own past research4 interviewing software industry hiring managers indicates that discerning such soft skills among new hires is an overwhelming priority across companies. The industry hiring managers and directors we interviewed over the past two years stated that while the capacity to code is a necessity for employment, these managers actually spend the vast majority of their recruitment time assessing a candidate's soft skills, as these suggest the presence of adaptive expertise (AE) and the candidate's potential for persistence and continual learning on the job.4 What was also intriguing to us in discussion with a wide range of hiring managers was their expressed willingness to consider graduates from alternative educational settings--in particular, so-called "coding bootcamps"--alongside more traditional hires from undergraduate computer science (CS) programs.4 While there is no single representative model of a coding bootcamp, these intense training programs extend, on average,14 weeks in duration, cost approximately $12,000, and emphasize teaching the programming skills that employers look for from new software developer hires (particularly front-end programming) while also enabling their graduates to grasp the most essential aspects of coding.6 Much of this expressed willingness to hire codecamp graduates stemmed directly back to hiring managers' perceptions that what boot-camp students may lack in rigorous CS knowledge is counterbalanced with greater work experience and the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills to join a wider team while remaining resilient in the face of unexpected challenges. This, of course, represented only one party's perspective.
