Digital inclusion and equity changes what's possible
Democratizing data access is key to bolstering data inclusion and equity but requires sophisticated data organization and sharing that doesn't compromise privacy. Rights management governance and high levels of end-to-end security can help ensure that data is being shared without security risks, says Zdankus. Ultimately, improving digital inclusion and equity comes down to company culture. "It can't just be a P&L [profit and loss] decision. It has to be around thought leadership and innovation and how you can engage your employees in a way that's meaningful in a way to build relevance for your company," says Zdankus. Solutions need to be value-based to foster goodwill and trust among employees, other organizations, and consumers. "If innovation for equity and inclusion were that easy, it would've been done already," says Zdankus. The push for greater inclusion and equity is a long-term and full-fledged commitment. Companies need to prioritize inclusion within their workforce and offer greater visibility to marginalized voices, develop interest in technology among young people, and implement systems thinking that focuses on how to bring individual strengths together towards a common outcome. Girls of Steel Showcase Projects for U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle
It's two weeks until the competition, and 17-year-old Ella Maier is ecstatic her robot can finally do a pull-up. "Oh, that's so exciting," the Girls of Steel member said, as her robot latched on to a bar at the team's practice facility and hoisted itself to the second rung. "I'm in charge of that subsystem, and I'm really pleased it works. There's always a fear that it might not perform. There are no guarantees on this stuff, ever."
Editorial: Artificial intelligence is not educational taboo
The importance of these subjects has been evident in the rapid growth and development of new industries -- particularly computer-related ones -- since the 1970s. However, that importance has only been codified for schools under the acronym STEM since 2001. That was when the National Science Foundation put a new emphasis on how critical education in those fields was. It has led to a hard push for schools to up the opportunities for kids to explore, learn and grow both exposure to and foundational knowledge of these areas. Almost every school looks to wedge STEM into a lesson any way possible, in addition to extracurricular activities that shore up how fun science and invention can be.
Generation equality: Empowering and giving visibility to women in robotics
On March 8, International Women's Day (IWD) we celebrate the political, socioeconomic and cultural achievements of women and the women right's movement towards gender equality. "Whilst the social and political rights of women are greater in some places than others, there is no country where gender equality has been achieved" says Mary Evans, professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science in her book "The persistence of gender inequality" (Polity Press 2017). In 2022 this situation has not changed either globally or at the European level as indicated in the EU Gender Equality index for 2020 where the average of the EU is 67.4% and the maximum is Sweden with 83.8%. Although there has been a clear commitment from the European Union on gender equality (specially in innovation and science), there are still structural forms of inequality that must be challenged and changed. It is not the aim of this article to analyse or comment on those, but to show what is being done and is available, especially in the European Union, for us to contribute as individuals and as a community towards gender equality in the field of robotics.
SCS Faculty Receive Nearly $2.5M in NSF CAREER Awards
Four Carnegie Mellon University researchers in the School of Computer Science recently received Faculty Early Career Development Program awards from the National Science Foundation. The nearly $2.5 million will further research in deep learning, the safety of robots and autonomous systems, software engineering, and machine learning for healthcare. The NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program, commonly known as CAREER awards, is the foundation's most prestigious for young faculty members. Changliu Liu, an assistant professor in the Robotics Institute, was awarded nearly $745,000 for research to improve the safety of autonomous systems operating closely with humans. The work will develop a new algorithmic framework to assure the safety of robotic systems that optimizes performance when safety can be managed, anticipates and compensates for inevitable failures when it cannot, and learns from past mistakes.

Deutsche Post DHL turns to machine learning to help find the skills of the future
Logistics giant Deutsche Post DHL says deployment of an AI-powered internal career marketplace has started to allow its half a million-plus global employee base to take charge of their own career paths. The company also claims that the technology is encouraging team members to build personal profiles that showcases their skills, helping them quickly find relevant training tools to fill skill gaps. The new system - delivered as part of what the corporation sees not as old-style'learning and development', but more modern'learning and growth' - is also claimed to support retention through internal career progression. It is also seen as boosting productivity, as employees feel more supported and empowered. The tech - from AI-powered people experience platform supplier Cornerstone - was also able to do in less than five minutes, what an average two years of learning and development (L&D) effort had been unable to: achieve 85% accuracy of skills categorization, even from a non-customized version.
AI-powered EdTech app Luca & Friends aims to promote fitness and learning - Global EdTech
GOFA, the creators of a new AI-powered EdTech app, Luca & Friends, are hoping their app will encourage children to improve their fitness and learn about STEM through the metaverse. Luca & Friends aims to be the first app of its kind to combine learning and fitness and is designed for kids ages 4-8.
