The MBA in Data Science and AI is open to undergraduate students of all backgrounds who have studied mathematics at the plus two level. NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi is starting an MBA programme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The MBA programme will start from the fall semester of 2022 and will integrate contemporary management concepts, soft skills for developing individuals, and a wide range of data science tools, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving and managerial decision-making. MBA in Data Science and AI is open to undergraduate students of all backgrounds who have studied mathematics in Class 12. Students can apply on the official website of IIT Mandi โ iitmandi.ac.in. The application process began on June 29 2022 and will conclude by July 17, 2022. Students who graduate from this MBA programme will find managerial-level work opportunities in consulting, analytics, and decision-making roles, as per an official statement from the IIT Mandi.

Better Methods and Theory for Federated Learning: Compression, Client Selection and Heterogeneity
Federated learning (FL) is an emerging machine learning paradigm involving multiple clients, e.g., mobile phone devices, with an incentive to collaborate in solving a machine learning problem coordinated by a central server. FL was proposed in 2016 by Kone\v{c}n\'{y} et al. and McMahan et al. as a viable privacy-preserving alternative to traditional centralized machine learning since, by construction, the training data points are decentralized and never transferred by the clients to a central server. Therefore, to a certain degree, FL mitigates the privacy risks associated with centralized data collection. Unfortunately, optimization for FL faces several specific issues that centralized optimization usually does not need to handle. In this thesis, we identify several of these challenges and propose new methods and algorithms to address them, with the ultimate goal of enabling practical FL solutions supported with mathematically rigorous guarantees.
University of Florida now offers faculty and staff free AI courses - EdScoop
The University of Florida is offering artificial intelligence courses to its faculty and staff for free as part of a years-long push to establish itself as an AI leader. After an internal announcement earlier this month, the university on Monday announced that AI microcredentials, which normally each cost around $240 and take four hours to complete, are freely available. The courses were developed in a collaboration between four of UF's colleges to familiarize professionals with AI. Making the credentials available to staff for free can help give context to people in departments like enrollment, fundraising or student life to speak about the institution's AI investments, said Regina Rodriguez, a provost fellow for professional education. "Being able to know that you are knowledgeable about a specific area that university is taking on and building across every single college is so important because then you can come to the table with knowledge or at least understanding the vocabulary and not feel intimidated," she told EdScoop.

School Surveillance Will Never Protect Kids From Shootings
If we are to believe the purveyors of school surveillance systems, K-12 schools will soon operate in a manner akin to some agglomeration of Minority Report, Person of Interest, and Robocop. "Military grade" systems would slurp up student data, picking up on the mere hint of harmful ideations, and dispatch officers before the would-be perpetrators could carry out their vile acts. In the unlikely event that someone were able to evade the predictive systems, they would inevitably be stopped by next-generation weapon-detection systems and biometric sensors that interpret the gait or tone of a person, warning authorities of impending danger. The final layer might be the most technologically advanced--some form of drone or maybe even a robot dog, which would be able to disarm, distract, or disable the dangerous individual before any real damage is done. If we invest in these systems, the line of thought goes, our children will finally be safe.
After Uvalde shooting, tech companies tout their solutions. But do they work?
After the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, an all-too-familiar question emerged: how do we prevent such horror from happening again? A handful of companies have said they have tech solutions that could help. They included Drone firm Axon, which promoted a remotely-operated Taser device to be deployed in schools. EdTech companies, including Impero Software, said their student surveillance services could flag warning signs and help prevent the next attack. The companies are part of a thriving school security industry, one that has grown to $3.1bn in 2021 from just $2.7m in 2017, according to market research firm Omdia.
