A world-first report from Dr Allan McCay in the Law School scrutinises advances in neurotechnology and what they might mean for the law and the legal profession. Dr Allan McCay, a criminal law scholar at the University of Sydney Law School, has published the first substantial overview of neurotechnology and its implications for the law and the legal profession. Neurotechnologies are technologies that interact directly with the brain, or more broadly the nervous system, by monitoring and recording neural activity, and/or acting to influence it. Sometimes neurotechnology is implanted in the brain but it may also be in the form of a headset, wristband or helmet. The technology is already being used in health settings for the treatment of patients with Parkinson's and epilepsy and could be used in the future to monitor and treat schizophrenia, depression and anxiety.


Object Goal Navigation using Data Regularized Q-Learning

Object Goal Navigation requires a robot to find and navigate to an instance of a target object class in a previously unseen environment. Our framework incrementally builds a semantic map of the environment over time, and then repeatedly selects a long-term goal ('where to go') based on the semantic map to locate the target object instance. Long-term goal selection is formulated as a vision-based deep reinforcement learning problem. Specifically, an Encoder Network is trained to extract high-level features from a semantic map and select a long-term goal. In addition, we incorporate data augmentation and Q-function regularization to make the long-term goal selection more effective. We report experimental results using the photo-realistic Gibson benchmark dataset in the AI Habitat 3D simulation environment to demonstrate substantial performance improvement on standard measures in comparison with a state of the art data-driven baseline.

A multilingual (English/Spanish) immersive learning environment is being created by an assistant professor at the University of Texas using virtual reality technology to help students better grasp the topic of additive manufacturing. The project, titled "Enhancing Active Learning in Additive Manufacturing Using a Bilingual, Assisted Virtual-Reality Platform," will be under the direction of Shuchisnigdha Deb, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering (IMSE). The research is being supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation worth $837,000. Emma Yang and Amanda Olsen, two other ISME faculty members from the College of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction, are also on the team. Deb asserted that teaching kids about additive manufacturing is crucial for the advancement of robots, augmented reality, and other technologies.


'I'm afraid': critics of anti-cheating technology for students hit by lawsuits

In 2020, a Canadian university employee named Ian Linkletter became increasingly alarmed by a new kind of technology that was exploding in use with the pandemic. It was meant to detect cheating by college and high-school students taking tests at home, and claimed to work by watching students' movements and analyzing sounds around them through their webcams and microphones to automatically flag suspicious behavior. So Linkletter accessed a section of the website of one of the anti-cheating companies, named Proctorio, intended only for instructors and administrators. He shared what he found on social media. Now Linkletter, who became a prominent critic of the technology, has been sued by the company. But he is not the only one.
