Developing Hands-on Labs for Source Code Vulnerability Detection with AI

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

As the role of information and communication technologies gradually increases in our lives, source code security becomes a significant issue to protect against malicious attempts. Furthermore, with the advent of data-driven techniques, there is now a growing interest in leveraging machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) as a source code assurance method to build trustworthy systems. Therefore, training our future software developers to write secure source code is in high demand. In this thesis, we propose a framework including learning modules and handson labs to guide future IT professionals towards developing secure programming habits and mitigating source code vulnerabilities at the early stages of the software development lifecycle. In this thesis, our goal is to design learning modules with a set of hands-on labs that will introduce students to secure programming practices using source code and log file analysis tools to predict/identify vulnerabilities. In a Secure Coding Education framework called (SeCodEd) we will (1) improve students' skills and awareness on source code vulnerabilities, detection tools, and mitigation techniques; (2) integrate concepts of source code vulnerabilities from Function, API, and library level to bad programming habits and practices; (3) leverage deep learning, NLP and static analysis tools for log file analysis to introduce the root cause of source code vulnerabilities.

UT Austin is launching a new online master's degree program in A.I.

#artificialintelligence

"Given the excitement and the applicability of machine learning and A.I., we thought that it would be a game changer to launch this program to give the workforce on a national level the ability to get up to speed on some of these groundbreaking tools and techniques," Adam Klivans, a professor of computer science at UT Austin tells Fortune. He also serves as director of the National A.I. Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning (IFML), which was designated by the National Science Foundation in 2020 to help develop foundational tools for the future of A.I. innovation. "What we've discovered is that they're all using tools and ideas from artificial intelligence and machine learningโ€ฆand their workforce needs to be trained to learn a lot of these ideas and these tools," he adds.

ChatGPT creator rolls out 'imperfect' tool to help teachers spot potential cheating - CNN

#artificialintelligence

Two months after OpenAI unnerved some educators with the public release of ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that can help students and professionals generate shockingly convincing essays, the company is unveiling a new tool to help teachers adapt. OpenAI on Tuesday announced a new feature, called an "AI text classifier," that allows users to check if an essay was written by a human or AI. The tool, which works on English AI-generated text, is powered by a machine learning system that takes an input and assigns it to several categories. In this case, after pasting a body of text such as a school essay into the new tool, it will give one of five possible outcomes, ranging from "likely generated by AI" to "very unlikely." Lama Ahmad, policy research director at OpenAI, told CNN that educators have been asking for a ChatGPT feature like this, but warns it should be "taken with a grain of salt."

When I asked ChatGPT to write an article about ChatGPT

#artificialintelligence

Ever since OpenAI's ChatGPT burst onto the scene, it's been the hottest thing on the marketing talk-track since TikTok. But is ChatGPT just the newest shiny object in a digital marketing world chock full of them? Artificial intelligence of various colors and flavors has assisted the marketing world over the last few years from chatbots to marketing optimization tools. Chatbot platforms such as Drift and LiveAgent offer AI-based Q&A; most of the ad buying platforms from Google to Meta feature some form of AI to run more effective media; messaging platforms offer AI features from send time optimization to auto segment-building; and companies such as Persado and Phrasee use AI to optimize language and email subject lines. But with ChatGPT, the AI kraken has been released.

Is Machine Learning Hard? A Guide to Getting Started

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning is an advanced field that incorporates many aspects of mathematics, computer science, and coding. A career in machine learning typically requires a Master's of Science degree. The education and training involved in machine learning can require intense dedication, depth of knowledge, and attention to detail. You can get started with machine learning by learning coding languages, practicing fine-tuning algorithms, and paying close attention to artificial intelligence applications for products and services. Everything from the technology of a Tesla vehicle, Netflix's recommendation algorithms, c or speech-to-text recognition on your iPhone represents an innovation in machine learning. You can find information about machine learning from a breadth of free, accessible resources.

Will machine learning help us find extraterrestrial life?

#artificialintelligence

When pondering the probability of discovering technologically advanced extraterrestrial life, the question that often arises is, "if they're out there, why haven't we found them yet?" And often, the response is that we have only searched a tiny portion of the galaxy. Further, algorithms developed decades ago for the earliest digital computers can be outdated and inefficient when applied to modern petabyte-scale datasets. Now, research published in Nature Astronomy and led by an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, Peter Ma, along with researchers from the SETI Institute, Breakthrough Listen and scientific research institutions around the world, has applied a deep learning technique to a previously studied dataset of nearby stars and uncovered eight previously unidentified signals of interest. "In total, we had searched through 150 TB of data of 820 nearby stars, on a dataset that had previously been searched through in 2017 by classical techniques but labeled as devoid of interesting signals," said Peter Ma, lead author.

Will ChatGPT Unflip the Classroom? - Education Next

#artificialintelligence

ChatGPT has occasioned a lot of hand-wringing, cheering, and philosophizing. Some have predicted "The End of High School English." Others have been enthusiastic to use it as a wonderful new teaching tool. But, through it all, I've been struck by the inattention to one very practical question: Is ChatGPT going to unflip the classroom? First, to be safe, I should quickly clarify two things.
