Multi-View Graph Representation Learning for Answering Hybrid Numerical Reasoning Question

Hybrid question answering (HybridQA) over the financial report contains both textual and tabular data, and requires the model to select the appropriate evidence for the numerical reasoning task. Existing methods based on encoder-decoder framework employ a expression tree-based decoder to solve numerical reasoning problems. However, encoders rely more on Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) methods, which take table serialization and text splicing as input, damaging the granularity relationship between table and text as well as the spatial structure information of table itself. In order to solve these problems, the paper proposes a Multi-View Graph (MVG) Encoder to take the relations among the granularity into account and capture the relations from multiple view. By utilizing MVGE as a module, we constuct Tabular View, Relation View and Numerical View which aim to retain the original characteristics of the hybrid data. We validate our model on the publicly available table-text hybrid QA benchmark (TAT-QA) and outperform the state-of-the-art model.
On the Effectiveness of Equivariant Regularization for Robust Online Continual Learning

Humans can learn incrementally, whereas neural networks forget previously acquired information catastrophically. Continual Learning (CL) approaches seek to bridge this gap by facilitating the transfer of knowledge to both previous tasks (backward transfer) and future ones (forward transfer) during training. Recent research has shown that self-supervision can produce versatile models that can generalize well to diverse downstream tasks. However, contrastive self-supervised learning (CSSL), a popular self-supervision technique, has limited effectiveness in online CL (OCL). OCL only permits one iteration of the input dataset, and CSSL's low sample efficiency hinders its use on the input data-stream. In this work, we propose Continual Learning via Equivariant Regularization (CLER), an OCL approach that leverages equivariant tasks for self-supervision, avoiding CSSL's limitations. Our method represents the first attempt at combining equivariant knowledge with CL and can be easily integrated with existing OCL methods. Extensive ablations shed light on how equivariant pretext tasks affect the network's information flow and its impact on CL dynamics.

Board members with the Hernando County School District voted last week to approve a one-year contract not going over $200,000 with ZeroEyes, a software company, according to FOX 13. ZeroEyes uses school district's security cameras to spot exposed or brandished firearms. The company was founded by Rob Huberty, a former Navy Seal, and claims that its software can alert first responders to a potential threat before someone is able to fire their weapon.

USC to open School of Advanced Computing -- and liberal arts majors are welcome
A USC sociology, history or dance major may not be attuned to the discipline of quantum computing, but the university's soon to open School of Advanced Computing will open its doors to all -- as well as dramatically expand the number of degrees it confers in technology-related fields, officials announced Thursday. The new University of Southern California school comes at time when jobs for computer and information research scientists are in high demand and fast-growing, projecting to increase 21% from 2021 to 2031, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A major component of the school will be dedicated to teaching data science and information technology to non-computer majors -- an offering that officials say will allow all students to develop their understanding of elements that shape the digital world, such as coding. "We want to develop a digital backbone across USC that touches every student and every graduate," said Ishwar Puri, senior vice president of research and innovation. "So when they go out into the world, they understand what computing is."

Late-Binding Scholarship in the Age of AI: Navigating Legal and Normative Challenges of a New Form of Knowledge Production

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to enable a new leap in the creation of scholarly content. New forms of engagement with AI systems, such as collaborations with large language models like GPT-3, offer affordances that will change the nature of both the scholarly process and the artifacts it produces. This article articulates ways in which those artifacts can be written, distributed, read, organized, and stored that are more dynamic, and potentially more effective, than current academic practices. Specifically, rather than the current "early-binding" process (that is, one in which ideas are fully reduced to a final written form before they leave an author's desk), we propose that there are substantial benefits to a "late-binding" process, in which ideas are written dynamically at the moment of reading. In fact, the paradigm of "binding" knowledge may transition to a new model in which scholarship remains ever "unbound" and evolving. An alternative form for a scholarly work could be encapsulated via several key components: a text abstract of the work's core arguments; hyperlinks to a bibliography of relevant related work; novel data that had been collected and metadata describing those data; algorithms or processes necessary for analyzing those data; a reference to a particular AI model that would serve as a "renderer" of the canonical version of the text; and specified parameters that would allow for a precise, word-for-word reconstruction of the canonical version. Such a form would enable both the rendering of the canonical version, and also the possibility of dynamic AI reimaginings of the text in light of future findings, scholarship unknown to the original authors, alternative theories, and precise tailoring to specific audiences (e.g., children, adults, professionals, amateurs).
