The consequences of recent criticisms of statistical tests have breathed brand new life into some very old howlers, many of which have been discussed on this blog. What is not funny, though, is how standard notions such as frequentist error probabilities are being redefined in the process, and how we now have arguments built on equivocations. With the explosion of data generation, getting optimal solutions to data driven problems is increasingly becoming a challenge, if not impossible.The importance of machine learning algorithms, which can handle this burst of data and assist in intelligent decision making, is thus realised among data scientists. Within this category of machine learning algorithms, a special focus area is bio-inspired algorithms. This review article provides the readers some inputs on the advances in the domain of bio inspired algorithms and their potential applications across domains. It is increasingly being recognised that applications of intelligent bio-inspired algorithms are necessary for addressing highly complex problems to provide working solutions in time, especially with dynamic problem definitions, fluctuations in constraints, incomplete or imperfect information and limited computation capacity. More and more such intelligent algorithms are thus being explored for solving different complex problems. While some studies are exploring the application of these algorithms in a novel context, other studies are incrementally improving the algorithm itself.

LegalVision raises 4.2 million Series B round to expand offering around Australia and explore machine learning - Startup Daily

Sydney legal startup LegalVision announced today that it has secured 4.2 million in a Series B round to continue its growth in the Australian online legal market. The funding round was led by commercial law firm Gilbert Tobin, who previously made a strategic investment into LegalVision last November. LegalVision delivers legal services through a tech-driven business model, helping businesses around Australia access quality resources by providing startups and SMBs with access to more than 3,000 legal articles and 40 free legal documents. In just over three years the startup reports that it has assisted more than 15,000 business around the country. CEO of LegalVision, Lachlan McKnight said the backing of Gilbert Tobin and the latest round of funding is validation of the startup's goal and progress to date.

Machine learning (ML) is all the hotness right now. There is literally a new story every week about a complicated problem that was solved using ML. Most of my coworkers and friends in the industry have expressed interest in learning about ML, but have not been able gain a foot hold. I believe the problem is that the current books and online classes are overwhelming; scaring away students before they have a chance to build up confidence. The problem I had when I started learning ML was that the tutorials insisted on teaching the math that is fundamental for machine learning to work.


Wildly popular Prisma app just made a major breakthrough

Over the past two months, its team of nine developers has made it possible for the app to run offline, without connecting to its servers. The update, available Tuesday for iOS devices, is a big deal because Prisma previously needed a large amount of computing power in remote servers to process each image. That work can now be performed on individual phones thanks to the improved efficiency of the app. If you haven't used Prisma, it works a lot like Instagram, without the social network component: Upload or take a photo, and the free app will transform it into artwork in the style of famous masterpieces. You can make your selfie look like Edvard Munch's The Scream, or your backyard resemble Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave.


Happy 98th Birthday, Katherine Johnson

Katherine Johnson as she received the Medal of Freedom. Johnson played a pivotal role in the American space program. She was one of the first African-American women to work at NASA (and the agency's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics). A mathematician, she worked as a "human computer" performing calculations for the Mercury, Apollo, and Shuttle programs. A NASA biography of Johnson says she was so respected by her peers that "John Glenn requested that she personally re-check the calculations made by the new electronic computers before his flight aboard Friendship 7--the mission on which he became the first American to orbit the Earth."
