The current state-of-the-art method for generating educational content, such as math word problems and hints, is manual authoring by domain experts. Unfortunately, this is costly, time consuming, and produces content that lacks diversity. Attempts to automatically address the time and diversity issues through natural language generation still do not produce content that is sufficiently creative and varied. Crowdsourcing is a viable alternative - there has been a great deal of research on leveraging human creativity to solve complex problems, such as user interface design. However, these systems typically decompose complex tasks into subtasks. Writing a single word problem or hint is a small enough problem that it is unclear how to further break it down, but also far more complex than typical microtasks like image labeling. Therefore, it is not obvious how to apply these worker improvement methods or which ones are most effective (if at all). We build upon successful task design factors in prior work and run a series of iterative studies, incrementally adding different worker-support elements. Our results show that successive task designs improved accuracy and creativity.

In this letter, a Hierarchical Parametric Empirical Bayes model is proposed to model spike count data. We have integrated Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) and empirical Bayes theory to simultaneously provide three advantages: (1) a model of over-dispersion of spike count values; (2) reduced MSE in estimation when compared to using the maximum likelihood method for GLMs; and (3) an efficient alternative to inference with fully Bayes estimators. We apply the model to study both simulated data and experimental neural data from the retina. The simulation results indicate that the new model can estimate both the weights of connections among neural populations and the output firing rates (mean spike count) efficiently and accurately. The results from the retinal datasets show that the proposed model outperforms both standard Poisson and Negative Binomial GLMs in terms of the prediction log-likelihood of held-out datasets.

KBpedia leverages six large-scale knowledge bases -- Wikipedia, Wikidata, GeoNames, OpenCyc, DBpedia and UMBEL -- into a single structure expressly designed to support artificial intelligence (AI) within enterprises." Michael Bergman, a co-founder of Cognonto, commented, "Many of the AI advances in recent years, such as question answering on smart phones or systems that beat human contestants in Jeopardy, are built around Web knowledge bases like Wikipedia… But these are one-off systems that only the largest tech firms or research outfits can afford… The idea behind Cognonto is to democratize this process such that any enterprise can afford to train their own machine learners or gain the advantages of knowledge-based artificial intelligence." The release continues, "KBpedia combines the hundreds of thousands of concepts and 20 million entities in its source knowledge bases in a structure that separately captures entities, attributes, relations and topics, the types by which they are categorized, and the connections between them. One innovation of the system, according to Bergman, is the schema, or "knowledge graph," that organizes KBpedia according to the logic of Charles Sanders Peirce, a noted 19th century American mathematician, philosopher and polymath."

I am a data mining trainer and consultant. This book not only has good content, but it offers a 90 day license of software with which to rehearse the case study examples. My comments on the book will be accompanied by comments on the software. The book is the perfect fit for its intended audience. With the caution that certain readers will do better elsewhere, I think it is a great book.

Grocery retailers face many challenges and barriers to delivering on their customer experience promises of'any time, anywhere'. To understand these challenges, we commissioned a global survey to discover how grocery retail managers and directors feel about their customer experience delivery. The research also uncovered thoughts on how to overcome the hurdles of delivering the best customer experience. The findings are the result of interviews with 750 grocery managers and directors across the globe, in the UK, USA, Germany and France.
