Whoosh! Swish! Meet Bat Bot, the new flying batlike drone
This photo provided by Alireza Ramezani, University of Illinois, shows a Bat Bot, a three-ounce flying robot that they say can be more agile at getting into treacherous places than standard drones. Because it mimics the unique and more flexible way bats fly, this new robot prototype can do a better and safer job getting into disaster sites and scoping out construction zones than those bulky drones with spinning rotors, said the three authors of a study released Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, in the journal Science Robotics.

All of a sudden, AI is everywhere--in consumer products, in our entertainment, in our consciousness. Every day we hear stories from Google, Uber, Baidu, Microsoft, Amazon and others about unprecedented achievements in language translation, gaming, image recognition, music composition, beer-delivering driverless trucks, and a host of achievements, all powered by AI. But what is AI, really? And, to be fair, do we even understand what intelligence is? In 1983, and long before what we think of now as the Internet, a developmental psychologist named Howard Gardner published what is now a seminal work on the "Theory of Multiple Intelligences".
How does it make you feel? Wearable system predicts wearer's mood
By predicting moods, AI like this can help ease social interactions for people who find them difficult. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Institute of Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) have developed a wearable they say can predict the mood of its wearer by analyzing speech patterns and physiological signs. The system may someday serve as a social coach for people with anxiety or Asperger's syndrome. "Imagine if, at the end of a conversation, you could rewind it and see the moments when the people around you felt the most anxious," Tuka Alhanai, a CSAIL graduate student who worked on the project, said in a statement. "Our work is a step in this direction, suggesting that we may not be that far away from a world where people can have an AI social coach right in their pocket."

Device reads brain activity to help locked-in people communicate
People with a rare condition called complete locked-in syndrome may finally have a link to the outside world. By reading the brain activity of completely paralyzed people in a new way, researchers could tell whether the test subjects were thinking'yes' or'no' in response to a question. The results were published Tuesday in the journal PLOS Biology. Four people with complete locked-in syndrome used the new technology to report that they were happy. The findings indicate that these people actually can communicate, with help from the right technology.
Wearable AI will help judge the tone of conversations
A single conversation can be interpreted in very different ways. For people with social anxiety or conditions like autism, this can make social situations extremely stressful. But a new device that can detect if a conversation is happy or sad based on speech patterns could make life easier for people who struggle in these situations. The Samsung Simband predicts if a conversation is happy or sad based on a person's speech patterns. Long pauses and monotonous vocal tones were associated with sadder stories.

Can Eagle-Eyed Artificial Intelligence Help Prevent Children From Going Blind?
In America, congenital cataracts--a clouding of the eye lens at birth that can lead to blindness--are vanishingly (and thankfully) uncommon. Like tooth decay or tetanus, better screening and technologies have led to earlier diagnoses, and the problem can largely be cured with surgery. But in developing countries, a lack of widespread expertise and resources mean that hundreds of thousands of children are now blind due to this treatable disease. "Missed or mistaken diagnoses, as well as inappropriate treatment decisions, are common among rare-disease patients and are contrary to the goals of precision medicine, especially in developing countries with large populations, such as China," write a group of Chinese researchers in a study published Monday in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. These researchers aim to fix that preventable treatment gap by using eagle-eyed AI.
