The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into businesses is no longer new. Task automation and chatbots are rapidly becoming the norm, cropping up across industries seeking increased efficiencies. But AI's potential extends far beyond menial tasks, and companies are now looking to leverage AI in a way that yields a competitive edge. That's where the CIO can come in as a coach to the rest of the company, an explorer of AI and its possibilities. The CIO, much more than just the IT leader they were considered to be in years past, today faces an open frontier of opportunities and emerging technology to help drive transformation.
Artificial intelligence can be sexist and racist just like humans
Many of us like to think that artificial intelligence could help eradicate biases, that algorithms could help humans avoid hiring or policing according to gender or race-related stereotypes. But a new study suggests that when computers acquire knowledge from text written by humans, they also replicate the same racial and gender prejudices--thus perpetuating them. Researchers at Princeton University and Britain's University of Bath found that machine learning "absorbs stereotyped biases" when trained on words from the internet. Their findings, published in the journal Science on Thursday, showed that machines learn word associations from written texts that mirror those learned by humans. "Don't think that AI is some fairy godmother," said study co-author Joanna Bryson.
Media's Data-Driven Future

For the past decade, as a venture capitalist and CEO of his own consulting firm and marketing agency, the Palmer Group, Palmer has focused his attention on the evolution of advertising, marketing, and related businesses, along with leading-edge technologies such as smart home systems and data analytics. We recently talked with Palmer in New York. Conscious of the intertwined trajectories of trends in technology and media, we sought to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and the churn in business models could affect advertising, media, and related fields over the next few years.

A true lie is a lie that becomes true when announced. In a logic of announcements, where the announcing agent is not modelled, a true lie is a formula (that is false and) that becomes true when announced. We investigate true lies and other types of interaction between announced formulas, their preconditions and their postconditions, in the setting of Gerbrandy's logic of believed announcements, wherein agents may have or obtain incorrect beliefs. Our results are on the satisfiability and validity of instantiations of these semantically defined categories, on iterated announcements, including arbitrarily often iterated announcements, and on syntactic characterization. We close with results for iterated announcements in the logic of knowledge (instead of belief), and for lying as private announcements (instead of public announcements) to different agents. Detailed examples illustrate our lying concepts.
Python TensorFlow Tutorial - Build a Neural Network - Adventures in Machine Learning
Google's TensorFlow has been a hot topic in deep learning recently. The open source software, designed to allow efficient computation of data flow graphs, is especially suited to deep learning tasks. It is designed to be executed on single or multiple CPUs and GPUs, making it a good option for complex deep learning tasks. In it's most recent incarnation โ version 1.0 โ it can even be run on certain mobile operating systems. This introductory tutorial to TensorFlow will give an overview of some of the basic concepts of TensorFlow in Python. These will be a good stepping stone to building more complex deep learning networks, such as Convolution Neural Networks and Recurrent Neural Networks, in the package.

PwC: Artificial Intelligence Will Be The Business Advantage Of The Future
Business decision makers are optimistic about artificial intelligence and the impact it will have on their businesses, according to a new study by PwC. "A Revolutionary Partnership: How AI Is Pushing Man And Machine Closer," a survey of 2,500 U.S. consumers and business decision makers, found that business leaders, specifically, believe AI is going to be fundamental in the future. In fact, 72% termed it a "business advantage." Business decision makers said they are most optimistic about AI's potential to increase efficiencies with automated communications and alerts to enable more proactive approaches (70%) and to improve big data analytics (59%). Additionally, PwC found, AI has the potential to minimize customer service pain points, with consumers beginning to prioritize AI service experiences over human contact.

Computers of the future could collect, store or delete your thoughts without your knowledge, experts claim. In a new study a pair of bioethicists claim that'neurotechnology' that links up to the brain could become so advanced and widespread that it is targeted by hackers. This will give intruders unauthorised access to the mind, allowing them to eavesdrop on thoughts and even delete them. Computers of the future could steal or even delete your thoughts, experts have claimed. The authors explain that as'neurotechnology' improves and becomes commonplace, there is a risk that the technology could be hacked.
