Porn ban: VPN interest surges as people look for best ways to bypass ID checks

The recently announced identity checks to stop under-18s from visiting pornographic websites in the UK have led to a surge in interest in technology that would allow people to bypass them. Critics claim the new rules are "disastrous" for people's privacy and are fundamentally flawed due to the ease of which they can be circumvented using virtual private networks (VPNs). Searches for VPNs on Google's search engine tripled in the hours following the government's announcement that the verification system would come into effect in July. We'll tell you what's true. Google Home can gently wake you up using Philips Hue lights

Smart lights still tend to offer a rude awakening if you tie them to your alarm, but Google wants to fix that. It's delivering a promised Gentle Sleep & Wake feature for Home speakers that gradually dims or brightens your Philips Hue lights to provide a more natural rest. Say the right command (such as "turn on Gentle Wake Up," "wake up my lights" or "sleep my lights") and the lights will change over the course of half an hour. You can set specific times if you intend to use it as part of your daily routine. The feature won't be widely available, at least not for a while.


Ubisoft is donating $564,000 to help rebuild Notre-Dame

Following the fire that devastated Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris this week, Ubisoft has pledged €500,000 ($564,000) to help restore the iconic church. The studio, which faithfully recreated Notre-Dame in Assassin's Creed Unity, is also offering that game for free until April 25th on PC to honor the landmark. "We want to give everyone the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame the best way we know how," Ubisoft, which is headquartered in France and has studios in Paris, said. In solidarity with everyone moved by Monday's events we're donating to the restoration of Notre-Dame & giving you the chance to play @AssassinsCreed Unity on Uplay for free. Such is the level of accuracy and detail that Ubisoft put into its version of the cathedral, some have suggested the studio's efforts on Unity could help with the reconstruction more directly, though the developer is not involved as things stand.

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research unit focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki - a leading Nordic university with a strong commitment to life science research. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community. A PhD student position is available in the research group of FIMM-EMBL Group Leader Dr. Esa Pitkänen at the Institute of Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), University of Helsinki. The research group will start at FIMM in July 2019, and will address data integration, analysis and interpretation challenges stemming from massive-scale data generated in clinical and research settings. We will work closely with interdisciplinary collaborators at University of Helsinki, Helsinki University Hospital, EMBL and German Cancer Research Center.

Deep learning processing unit delivers 135 GOPS/W on midrange FPGAs

The Omnitek deep learning processing unit (DPU) employs a novel mathematical framework combining low-precision fixed point maths with floating point maths to achieve 135 GOPS/W at full 32-bit floating point accuracy when running the VGG-16 CNN in an Arria 10 GX 1150. Scalable across a wide range of Arria 10 GX and Stratix 10 GX devices, the DPU can be tuned for low cost or high performance in either embedded or data centre applications. The DPU is fully software programmable in C/C or Python using standard frameworks such as TensorFlow, enabling it to be configured for a wide range of standard CNN models including GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and VGG-16 as well as custom models. No FPGA design expertise is required to do this. "We are very excited to apply this unique innovation, resulting from our joint research program with Oxford University, to reducing the cost of a whole slew of AI-enabled applications, particularly in video and imaging where we have a rich library of highly optimised IP to complement the DPU and create complete systems on a chip", commented Roger Fawcett, CEO at Omnitek.

Artificial Intelligence Powering Boom in Israel's Digital Health Sector

TEL AVIV, Israel, 16 April 2019--Israel's reams of electronic medical records –health data on its population of around 8.9 million people-- are proving fruitful for a growing number of digital health startups training algorithms to do things like early detection of diseases and produce more accurate medical diagnoses. According to a new report by Start-Up Nation Central, the growth in the number of Israeli digital health startups –537 companies, up from 327 in 2014--has drawn in new investors, including Israeli VCs who have never previously invested in healthcare. This has driven financing in the sector to a record $511M in 2018, up 32% year on year. By the first quarter of 2019 the amount raised was already at $214M. Of the $511M, over 50% ($285M) went to companies in decision support and diagnostics which rely heavily on data crunching.
