Navy starts building new massive, 50-ton undersea attack drone

The Navy is planning to launch a massive, 50-ton undersea drone to expand mission scope, increase attack options, integrate large high-tech sensors, further safeguard manned combat crews and possibly fire torpedoes -- all while waging war under the ocean surface. The 50-ton Orca, which would not fit in a submarine launch tube, brings an unprecedented sensing, endurance and attack advantage. The Navy has finished its Critical Design Review of the Orca, called an Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle, and begun construction, Capt. Pete Small, Program Manager for Unmanned Systems, Naval Sea Systems Command, said in early May at the Navy League's Sea Air Space Symposium. Earlier this year, Boeing was awarded a $43 million deal to build four Orcas.

HSBC rolls out SoftBank's robot Pepper to achieve 'Branch of the Future'

HSBC and SoftBank Robotics America are working together to roll out robotics in retail banking. Humanoid robot Pepper, developed by SoftBank, has been launched in a Miami branch of HSBC, marking the first time the bot has been used in retail banking in the state of Florida. HSBC has already used Pepper in the US, and was the first bank in the country to use the robot. It started in HSBC's flagship Manhattan branch and has since spread across the country, with Miami marking an important milestone in the rollout. Pepper works to improve customer engagement by educating customers on product information and making self service available.

The institute seeks to achieve scientific breakthroughs by constructing AI systems with reasoning, learning, and reading capabilities.[1] Oren Etzioni was appointed by Paul Allen in September 2013 to direct the research at the institute.[2][3][4] In 2018, the institute partnered with the University of Washington to explore deep learning artificial intelligence designed to predict how dogs would respond to stimulus. Researchers used over 20,000 frames of video to train an AI to predict movements and learn other dog behavior.[15]

In southeast England, patients discharged from a group of hospitals serving 500,000 people are being fitted with a Wi-Fi-enabled armband that remotely monitors vital signs such as respiratory rate, oxygen levels, pulse, blood pressure, and body temperature. Under a National Health Service pilot program that now incorporates artificial intelligence to analyze all that patient data in real time, hospital readmission rates are down, and emergency room visits have been reduced. What's more, the need for costly home visits has dropped by 22%. Longer term, adherence to treatment plans have increased to 96%, compared to the industry average of 50%. The AI pilot is targeting what Harvard Business School Professor and Innosight co-founder Clay Christensen calls "non-consumption."
