China's AI teachers could revolutionize education worldwide
China is betting big on the potential of artificial intelligence to revolutionize education. A newly published MIT Technology Review story details how the nation is embracing AI as both a replacement and a supplement to human teachers -- and the outcome of the country's AI experiment could affect the future of education on a global scale. From algorithms that curate tutoring lessons to surveillance systems that monitor classroom progress, tens of millions of Chinese students currently rely on some sort of AI to help them learn, MIT Tech reports, with three elements factoring into AI-powered education's ability to thrive in China. For one, the nation has made it a point to incentivize such efforts through tax breaks. Then there's the fact that education is already something of a competitive sport in China, with students -- and their parents -- willing to try anything that might increase their test scores even slightly. Finally, the people developing these AIs have a wealth of data available for training purposes as China places less of an emphasis on individual data privacy than many other developed countries.

OMB guidance: Robotic process automation key in encouraging 'high-value activities' - FedScoop
The White House Office of Management and Budget is promoting robotic process automation (RPA) as a technology that can help agencies minimize the time employees spend doing low-value, repetitive work. In a memorandum on "shifting from low-value to high-value work" released Monday, Director Mick Mulvaney delivers three directives to executive agencies. "Each year, Federal employees devote tens of thousands of hours to low-value compliance activities from rules and requirements that have built up over decades," the memo reads. In fact, shifting from low-value to high-value work is Cross-Agency Priority (CAP) goal number six. Per the recent memorandum, to operationalize this goal, agencies must designate a point of contact to coordinate "burden-reduction initiatives" and provide semi-annual updates on progress.

Artificial intelligence can detect eye disease
IDx, a Coralville-based med technology firm, is giving the world a glimpse into what eye health care might look like in the future. IDx-DR, an autonomous artificial intelligence diagnostic system developed by Dr. Michael Abramoff to detect diabetic retinopathy, gained approval in 2018 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The technology is to be used in health care settings patients already visit, such as their primary care physician's office, to catch the disease before it causes permanent damage. "The early detection of this disease is important. We're reducing the burden on patients by making it easier to access testing," said Ben Clark, president and chief operating officer of IDx. "Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the United States," he said.
Google's DeepMind follows a mixed path to AI in medicine ZDNet
There are many headline studies about artificial intelligence making strides in medicine, but the reality can be somewhat more prosaic. What gets used in hospitals and clinicians' offices may be much simpler, and a lot less like AI than you would think. In the latest issue of Nature magazine, DeepMind researchers published the results of a deep learning project that can predict kidney failure of patients in the hospital up to 48 hours before the onset of symptoms, with far greater accuracy than existing computer programs for such predictive uses. Also this week, the DeepMind team published the results of a third-party survey of the use of a computer program called "Streams," which uses no artificial intelligence but which can be useful to physicians for things such as being alerted to warning signs about a patient. The first project, the deep learning one, has some ways to go to be put into practice, while the Streams software is already in use by doctors and hospital staff.
