How Artificial Intelligence Changes Racing as we know it -- a Visit at Roborace
Ever since we first heard about this company called Roborace that builds driverless AI racing cars, we knew we had to see it in action at some point -- change was in the air. A few weeks ago, we finally had the opportunity to do so and joined the final track test for Roborace's Season Alpha. Roborace is an autonomous-vehicle racing series that combines fully-electric race cars with artificial intelligence, the first series of its kind in the world. Roborace was established to "accelerate the development of autonomous software by pushing the technology to its limits in a range of controlled environments." In 2018, one of Roborace's driverless vehicles, the RoboCar, completed the first-ever autonomous hill climb at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Telemed5000: Increase the capacity of telemedicine with artificial intelligence – AfricaNewsAnalysis
Berlin, 02.09.2019 – The telemedical co-management of patients with chronic heart failure has proven its worth. But so far, a single telemedicine center has not been able to care for more than 500 patients. The project Telemed5000 of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin aims to develop an intelligent system for the telemedical co-management of several thousand cardiological risk patients. This is to be achieved with the help of innovative technical possibilities. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy is funding the project for three years with around 4.5 million euros – of which the Charité as consortium leader will receive 2.1 million euros.

Japanese Government Eyes USD 19m for Automated Simultaneous Interpretation by 2025 Slator
Simultaneous interpretation (SI) has been described by research scientists as "an extremely difficult job […] requiring careful concentration and having very little margin for error." Enhancing the difficulty is the fact that the practice of interpretation, per se, is "as much interpersonal as it is linguistic," as one professional interpreter put it. Little surprise then that interpretation -- heretofore largely unchanged by software advances -- would be a highly attractive target for AI research. Hoping for a shot at the brass ring of automated SI is the Japanese government, which will fund the development of AI-powered software that can deliver SI in 15 languages in time for the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, according to an August 28, 2019 article in Nikkei Asian Review. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will ask for JPY 2bn (USD 18.9m) in the fiscal 2020 budget to fund the program, the same article said.
IBM Study: The Skills Gap is Not a Myth, But Can Be Addressed with Real Solutions - Sep 6, 2019
In the next three years, as many as 120 million workers in the world's 12 largest economies may need to be retrained or reskilled as a result of AI and intelligent automation, according to a new IBM (NYSE: IBM) Institute for Business Value (IBV) study. In addition, only 41 percent of CEOs surveyed say that they have the people, skills and resources required to execute their business strategies. The study, which includes input from more than 5,670 global executives in 48 countries, points to compounding challenges that require a fundamental shift in how companies meet and manage changing workforce needs throughout all levels of the enterprise. According to the global research, the time it takes to close a skills gap through training has increased by more than 10 times in just four years. In 2014, it took three days on average to close a capability gap through training in the enterprise; in 2018, it took 36 days.

Emerging Memories And Artificial Intelligence
On August 29, 2019 I put on a workshop on Emerging Memories and Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University put on by the Stanford Center for Magnetic Nanotechnology and Coughlin Associates. We had several interesting speakers talking about various types of artificial intelligence and the role that new non-volatile memories will play in both training AI models and implementing them in the field using inference engines. This piece will talk about some of the material presented at this workshop. Dr. Shan Wang, co-organizer of the event gave a introduction, talking about emerging non-volatile memories and in particular on Magnetic Random Access Memory (MRAM). He spoke about how various new memories work--in particular Resistive RAM (RRAM), Phase Change Memory (PCM), MRAM and Ferrroelectic RAM (FRAM).

Imperial College London understand the term "AI" as meaning the development of intelligent systems that embody a practical solution. However, practical solutions involving AI will require a broader approach and the College will drive technical innovation by providing broad training for exploitation of multiple technological strategies within the broader realm of AI.
