Mesmerising footage shows the greatest density of sea turtles ever recorded
Incredible drone footage has captured video of the largest ever gathering of sea turtles near a wildlife refuge in Costa Rica as they prepare to lay their eggs. Every year hundreds of thousands of female sea turtles arrive at the Ostional Nacional Wildlife Refuge within a few days of each other. Biologist Vanessa Bézy has been studying this phenomenon - called an arribada - and filmed olive ridley sea turtles aggregating in the ocean before reaching shore. She said she saw thousands of turtles per square mile during the filming. Sea turtles are at their most vulnerable to predators when they are tiny hatchlings on the beach and so large groups of mothers lay their eggs at the same time in the same area to increase the chance of their offspring surviving.
Researcher stumbles upon mysterious 5,000-year-old paintings depicting arrows and human-like figures
A collection of 5,000-year-old cave paintings depicting various figures and symbols has been discovered in Spain. The drawings were discovered in the rocky area of San Juan, near the town of Albuquerque in the province of Badajoz in western Spain. They are around 4 inches in length and include some anthropomorphic figures, as well as an arrow and other symbols, according to Spanish daily newspaper La Vanguardia. The doodlings were discovered by Agustín Palomo, an historic researcher who lives locally to the caves, while he was looking for a type of tomb known as a Dolmen. Mr Palomo immediately recognised their significance, given their location not far from two other well-known sets of cave drawings - 'Risco de San Blas', of the Sierra de la Carava and those of Azagala - the latter of which were only discovered around 20 years ago.
An AI Debated Its Own Potential for Good vs. Harm. Here's What It Came up With
Artificial intelligence is going to overhaul the way we live and work. But will the changes it brings be for the better? As the technology slowly develops (let's remember that right now, we're still very much in the narrow AI space and nowhere near an artificial general intelligence), whether it will end up doing us more harm than good is a question at the top of everyone's mind. What kind of response might we get if we posed this question to an AI itself? Last week at the Cambridge Union in England, IBM did just that.
Ireland is top AI talent hub in the EU
The Republic has the highest ratio of artificial intelligence (AI) talent in the European Union, according to a new study from LinkedIn. The report comes as the recruitment website is itself planning to hire 20 additional AI specialists locally with the promise of more jobs in the area in the future. The study reveals that half of all Europe's AI workers are based in just three countries: the United Kingdom, France, and Germany – with the UK leading by a significant margin. But, on a per capita basis, Ireland is far and away the top nation for AI talent, followed by Finland, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Sweden. LinkedIn attributed Ireland's leading position to a number of factors, including the high number of tech companies that have established centres on data analytics, machine learning and big data locally.
DARPA, CIA Scientist and Engineering Dr. Robert Duncan Whistleblower
I will begin by saying, we are living in a time where the dangers of Military technology is now beyond our control. We live as guinea pigs in a world where those with the power, knowledge and technology keep us from our true freedom. To live with free will in this beautiful world. They manipulate us, direct us and destroy everything that was truly divine and sacred in our mind. In this timeline we must decide, will they take our spirit and destroy what god intended or will we stand and fight the evil and it's new designs.
Royal Cornwall Hospital deploys AI tool for secure surgical videos
Royal Cornwall Hospital has deployed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that allows clinicians to view case videos safely and securely. Touch Surgery Enterprise enables automatic processing and viewing of surgical videos for clinicians and their teams without compromising sensitive patient data. These videos can be accessed via mobile app or web shortly after the operation to encourage self-reflection, peer review and improve preoperative preparation. In a usual hospital setting, surgical videos are often left unused due to the vast amounts of sensitive patient data they contain, according to Digital Surgery, the company behind Touch Surgery Enterprise. But the company's hardware, the DS1 computer, plugs into existing recording equipment in a theatre and runs real-time artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to redact all frames containing potentially identifiable patient and clinician information.
Could Artificial Intelligence be the answer to economic diversification in the GCC?
Erratic oil prices in recent years have made economic diversification essential, and AI is an alternate solution. Having made an early start, these states are positioned to become a key player in AI technology. Dividing the Middle East into four main regions, first, the UAE, second, Saudi Arabia, the GCC 4 comprising of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar on third and lastly Egypt, a PWC research expects the Arab states to accrue two percent of the total global benefits in the next ten years. Projected to mark the highest gains, the UAE would get nearly 14 percent on its GDP in 2030 while the kingdom of Saudi Arabia should make over US $135 billion by that time as well, this being nearly 12.4 percent of its GDP. Assigning large budgets for the speedy implementation of AI, these two GCC states have made a major impact.
See the exact moment the retiring world champion of Go realised DeepMind's machine was 'an entity that cannot be defeated'
Lee Se-dol, a former international champion of the game Go, has announced his retirement from competitive play. He became world-famous after losing a set of matches to AlphaGo, the matchplaying software developed by Google's DeepMind artificial intelligence unit. Until 2016, Go was considered so complex that software might be incapable of mastering it. There are almost an infinite number of gameplay combinations, giving humans -- with their instincts and gut feel for where the game is going -- an advantage over machines. But, "with the debut of AI in Go games, I've realized that I'm not at the top even if I become the No. 1 through frantic efforts," Lee told the Yonhap News Agency. "Even if I become the No. 1, there is an entity that cannot be defeated."
Augmented reality wine labels see growing adoption
The company's app and platform lets wineries and wine producers create, manage, and market an augmented reality experience for their own labels via a smartphone app. Now, says the company, 524 wineries from across the world are participating in the trial and accessing the marketing potential of a marriage of artificial intelligence and augmented reality. "I don't believe anything like this has been done to this level before – bringing together artificial intelligence, augmented reality, clever technology, 500 different wineries with different visuals and branding, as well as different languages," says app creator and Winerytale founder Dave Chaffey. "This platform is purpose-built for mass adoption and accessibility to any winery wanting to take advantage of a brand marketing and sales future that will undeniably involve augmented reality." The technology is designed to work on any wine label, using artificial intelligence to scan and recognize labels, and augmented reality to showcase the wine's backstory by beaming it from an imaginary space inside and outside of the bottle.
Impactful AI - 4th MeetUp
In this meetup series, we want to inspire everyone to use or implement Machine Learning and AI not only to serve great causes but also to have a demonstrable positive impact on society. We'll be talking about how we can use AI to do just that, through applying it to health, education, democracy, nutrition and more, but also how we can technically implement that while ensuring what we build is ethical. Please register on Eventbrite to be sure to secure a spot! Abstract: Healthcare is one of the most challenging spaces in which artificial intelligence operates. Medical machine learning solutions are highly regulated, require the most personal of data and have literal life-and-death consequences.
