The rise of 'algorithm hacking' โ€“ and how it may be leading marketers astray

#artificialintelligence

Even though Robert Burns wrote the line "the best-laid schemes o' mice a' men/gang aft agley" more than 200 years ago, it still resonates. In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), many brands are learning this the hard way as a new generation of algorithm hackers subvert their use of cognitive technologies. AI is increasingly central to driving timely, personalised marketing communications. But by undermining the code they are built on, algorithm hackers are both subverting marketing initiatives and damaging the integrity of data. Addressing this issue depends on brands better understanding consumer motivations and the key drivers behind their own marketing initiatives.

Is AI The Way Forward For Global Health? -- AI Daily - Artificial Intelligence News

#artificialintelligence

Despite huge advancements and progress in the world of global health over the past decades, many middle and low-income countries are still falling behind, unable to reach their sustainable development goals. This, in turn, is creating an urgency to prioritize wellbeing, and AI holds enormous promise in transforming the provision of healthcare in resource strained environments. The Artificial Intelligence in Global Health report, funded by the USAID's Center for Innovation and Impact, Rockefeller Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, outlined 27 cases of AI in global healthcare, and the massive potential it holds for drastically improving health in LEDC's. The use of AI was split into four key areas - population health, patient and front line health worker virtual assistants, and physician clinical decision support. Not only does the report provide solutions that could improve the access, quality, and effectiveness of global healthcare, but it also takes into account the current maturity of AI systems and the feasibility of these solutions.

Soul Machines raises $40 million for AI-powered customer-facing digital avatars

#artificialintelligence

Virtual avatars might well be the future of customer support. According to Juniper Research, conversational assistants will drive cost savings of over $8 billion annually by 2022 (up from $20 million in 2017). In fact, chatbots are anticipated to power 85% of all customer service interactions by year-end 2020 -- already, 42% of consumers use them on the regular. It was with this in mind that Greg Cross and Mark Sagar, a former special projects supervisor at director Peter Jackson's Weta Digital, founded Soul Machines in 2016. The goal was to develop a suite enabling clients to build interactive customer experiences.

Warner Bros. Planning On Using AI To Decide Which Movies to Make

#artificialintelligence

It seems Warner Bros. is taking data analytics out of their own hands and into those of an artificial intelligence system. The 96-year-old company has faltered in recent years due to allegations of executive misconduct and critical business mistakes. Warner Bros. has also bungled the development of some of their most valuable IPs, such as DC superhero films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. It's no secret that Warner Bros. has struggled to catch up with Marvel at the box office, but it's surprising just how far behind they really are. Justice League, a movie that was supposed to be the piรจce de rรฉsistance of the DCEU, ended up costing the studio upwards of $100 million.

"She" goes missing from presidential language

#artificialintelligence

Throughout most of 2016, a significant percentage of the American public believed that the winner of the November 2016 presidential election would be a woman -- Hillary Clinton. Strikingly, a new study from cognitive scientists and linguists at MIT, the University of Potsdam, and the University of California at San Diego shows that despite those beliefs, people rarely used the pronoun "she" when referring to the next U.S. president before the election. Furthermore, when reading about the future president, encountering the pronoun "she" caused a significant stumble in their reading. "There seemed to be a real bias against referring to the next president as'she.' This was true even for people who most strongly expected and probably wanted the next president to be a female," says Roger Levy, an MIT professor of brain and cognitive sciences and the senior author of the new study.

AnyConnect and ASUS Bring Smarter Camera AI to the Edge

#artificialintelligence

AnyConnect and ASUS today announced the availability of a smart camera platform, powered by AI at the edge, for Wi-Fi, 4G, and 5G networks. Together, AnyConnect Smarter Camera Platform and ASUS Tinker Edge T enable the development of AI cameras for markets including security, transportation, and retail. "Smart cameras will be the largest market for 5G IoT solutions over the next 3 years, representing 70% of all 5G IoT endpoints," according to Stephanie Baghdassarian, senior research director at Gartner Research. The AnyConnect Smarter Camera Platform is an Application Enablement Platform (AEP) for AI cameras. It combines AI with secured connectivity over Wi-Fi, 4G, and 5G networks to enable camera networks with instant decisions, notifications, and actions.

NATO critic Trump now floats expanding group to include Middle East

The Japan Times

WASHINGTON โ€“ U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said he supported expanding the North American Treaty Organization to include Middle Eastern nations, as the United States seeks to limit its troop footprint globally. "I think that NATO should be expanded and we should include the Middle East, absolutely," Trump told reporters at the White House. Trump proposed increased NATO involvement in the Middle East on Wednesday, when he addressed the Iranian strikes against U.S. troops in Iraq, carried out in retaliation for a U.S. drone strike that killed a top Iranian military commander. The military leader, Qassem Soleimani, played a major role in the fight against Islamic State militants in the region. Trump said Islamic State presented an international problem that other countries should help address. "We can come home, largely come home and use NATO," Trump said.

House votes to curb Trump's power to strike Iran without Congress OK

The Japan Times

WASHINGTON โ€“ The U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to limit President Donald Trump's authority to strike Iran, a mostly symbolic move Democrats say defends Congress's constitutional powers but Republicans say endangers national security. The resolution was adopted on a 224-194 vote, as tensions in the Middle East remain high after a U.S. drone strike killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. Iran retaliated with missiles striking an Iraqi base used by U.S. troops late Tuesday, without casualties, leaving uncertainty about future hostilities. With Thursday's resolution, the House is saying that Congress should be consulted before the conflict with Iran escalates. The Senate now can either consider the House-passed measure or move forward with a different version introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia.
