Forget the robocalypse-- 'Homo connecticus' may be what's coming

Robots' potential to take over the world is a commonly expressed fear in the world of AI, but at least one Turing Award winner doesn't see it happening that way. Rather than replacing mankind, technology will create a new kind of human that will coexist with its predecessors while taking advantage of new tech-enabled tools. So argued Raj Reddy, former founding director of Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute and 1994 winner of the Turing Award, at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Germany last week. "I could not have predicted much of what has happened in AI," Reddy told an audience of journalists at a press conference. "Four or five things happened in AI in the last decade that I didn't think would happen in my lifetime," including achievements in language translation and AI's triumph at the game of Go.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. U.S. stocks are slumping in Monday morning trading as healthcare companies and banks take the biggest losses. Energy companies are inching higher as oil prices rise. Major indexes in Europe and Asia are also starting the week on a steep skid. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 108 points, or 0.6%, to 18,153 as of 10:15 a.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 10 points, or 0.4%, to 2,155.

A robotic hand exoskeleton helps stroke patients integrate rehabilitation exercises into their everyday lives. Scientists at ETH Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory in Switzerland have invented a robotic system that they say could fundamentally change the daily lives of stroke patients. According to the ETH scientists, one in six people will suffer a stroke in their lifetime; two thirds of those affected suffer from paralysis of the arm. Intensive clinical training, including robot-assisted therapy, can help patients regain a degree of limited control over their arms and hands. But now Roger Gassert, Professor of Rehabilitation Engineering at ETH Zurich, has a better idea.

"Will work still be the place where we integrate individuals into societies?" asks End of Shift -- The Robots Are Taking Over, a new documentary on the future of work by filmmaker Klaus Martens that premiered last week on German and French public television (I make a brief appearance in it as well). It is a rhetorical question, and although not verbalized by the narrator before the end of the film, it is omnipresent from the first scene on and implicitly precludes all interviews and footage that Martens and his crew captured in Germany, France, Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The topic is acute: An oft-cited Oxford study predicted in 2013 that software and robots will eliminate half of the human work force within the next two decades. This year's OECD report comes to a less pessimistic conclusion, emphasizing the heterogeneity of workers' tasks within occupations. It projects that "on average across the 21 OECD countries, 9 percent of jobs are automatable" (e.g. in Germany 12 percent, in France 9 percent, and in the US 9 percent), and low qualified workers will be most affected.


Listen to the First Music Ever Made With a Computer

Researchers from New Zealand have restored the very first recording ever made of computer generated music. The three simple melodies, laid down in 1951, were generated by a machine built by the esteemed British computer scientist Alan Turing. Computer scientist Alan Turing is primarily remembered for being the father of artificial intelligence and for hacking the Nazi Enigma machine during the Second World War, but as the co-purveyor of the Church-Turing thesis, he recognized the ability of computers to do just about anything--including making music. With the help of BBC broadcasters, Turing made history by being the first person to use a computer to generate music, and then record that music to a storage medium--in this case a 12-inch acetate disc. Turing created the music at the Computing Machine Laboratory in Manchester, England, on a primitive device that occupied nearly an entire floor.


Alan Turing A Musical Innovator? First Recording Of Computer-Generated Music Restored After 65 Years

Researchers from New Zealand have restored the earliest known recording of computer-generated music, which was created nearly 65 years ago on a gigantic computer devised by the famous Alan Turing. Researchers from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch restored the recording created in 1951 using a BBC outside-broadcasting unit and a portable acetate disk. The recording, which begins with the United Kingdom's "God Save the Queen," also includes the nursery rhyme "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and the Glenn Miller hit "In The Mood." "Today all that remains of the recording session is a 12-inch single-sided acetate disc, cut by the BBC's technician while the computer played. The computer itself was scrapped long ago, so the archived recording is our only window on that historic soundscape," the researchers said in a statement Monday. The recording captured on the acetate disk was originally played on a massive computer, which occupied most of the ground floor of Turing's Computing Machine Laboratory.

He is most famous for cracking the Enigma code, in a move that is said to have shortened WWII by two years and saved up to 22 million additional lives. But Alan Turing also pioneered the use of computers for making music. Now, 65 years after the first computer-generated music was recorded, researchers have restored the aural artefact, which paved the way for everything from synthesizers to modern electronica. When Professor Jack Copeland (right) and composer Jason Long (left) examined the 12-inch (30.5 cm) acetate disc containing the music, they found the audio was distorted. The recording was made 65 years ago by a BBC outside-broadcast unit at the Computing Machine Laboratory in Manchester, northern England.
