For the four-hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death, Gregory Doran, the artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, wanted to dazzle. He turned to "The Tempest," the late romance that includes flying spirits, a shipwreck, a vanishing banquet, and a masque-like pageant that the magician Prospero stages to celebrate his daughter's marriage. "The Tempest" was performed at the court of King James I, and it may have been intended in part to showcase the multimedia marvels of Jacobean court masques. "Shakespeare was touching on that new form of theatre," Doran told me recently, over the phone. "So we wanted to think about what the cutting-edge technology is today that Shakespeare, if he were alive now, would be saying, 'Let's use some of that.' " The politics behind Shakespeare and stage illusion are more fraught than usual these days.

Artificial intelligence "will soon destroy millions of human jobs," warned Gerd Leonhard of The Futures Agency, a speaker at Tata Communications' CEO Summit 2016 earlier this month. "In five years most companies will have armies of very cheap, very powerful machines, connected to a smart cloud, and they will be able to accomplish so many routine processes," the Zurich-based futurist said. "Some 25 years from now machines, through cognitive computing and using vast amounts of data from humans, will do all of that kind of work." Key Apple Health Technology Executive Said to Depart Company
Yoky Matsuoka, who joined Apple Inc. in May as an executive to help run health technology initiatives, has left the iPhone maker, according to people familiar with the matter. Matsuoka was hired to lead teams involved with the company's HealthKit tracking software, the CareKit tool for managing patient medical care, the ResearchKit framework for conducting medical studies via Apple devices, and related machine learning algorithms. Matsuoka reported to Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, who also runs the teams related to the Apple Watch, health research, and fitness applications. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. Before joining Apple, Matsuoka led technology efforts as a vice president at Alphabet Inc.'s Nest Labs.
