Just imagine, if 100 years ago the Wright brothers would have tried to build an'artificial bird' rather than calling it an airplane? We would have had endless discussions around engineering this machine to emulate birds in every detail. Would you feel comfortable to fly on an artificial bird? Does an artificial factory produce better cars than a human-centered production environment? Artificial intelligence was invented as a term in the 1950's when computer science professors at Dartmouth College convened a conference in order to teach computers to think during one summer - a slightly optimistic view as it turned out.

Words such as'porn', 'nsfw', 'sex' and similar terms will no longer appear when searched under'Latest' tab – but, racial slurs and the word'jihad' have not been removed. Although Twitter has blocked these words from being found in the Latest tab, users can still find some of the'forbidden' terms by searching in the'Top' tab. Twitter has quietly started blocking certain words on the platform's built-in search engine. Idaho is the second state to allow unmanned robots to deliver to your front door

Idaho has become the second U.S. state to pass legislation to permit unmanned, ground-based delivery robots to rove around on sidewalks across the state. Earlier this month, Virginia made robotics history as the first state to pass a law specifically addressing the use of autonomous terrestrial delivery robots. The new Idaho law, which was signed by the governor today, goes into effect July 1. The legislation was championed by state Republican lawmakers, Jason Monks in the House and Bert Brackett in the Senate. Monks worked with Starship Technologies, an Estonia-based robot delivery company, on the legislation, which sailed through both state houses to pass in less than a month.


A Neural Probabilistic Structured-Prediction Method for Transition-Based Natural Language Processing

We propose a neural probabilistic structured-prediction method for transition-based natural language processing, which integrates beam search and contrastive learning. The method uses a global optimization model, which can leverage arbitrary features over non-local context. Beam search is used for efficient heuristic decoding, and contrastive learning is performed for adjusting the model according to search errors. When evaluated on both chunking and dependency parsing tasks, the proposed method achieves significant accuracy improvements over the locally normalized greedy baseline on the two tasks, respectively.


Combinatorial Multi-armed Bandits for Real-Time Strategy Games

Games with large branching factors pose a significant challenge for game tree search algorithms. In this paper, we address this problem with a sampling strategy for Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithms called "naive sampling", based on a variant of the Multi-armed Bandit problem called "Combinatorial Multi-armed Bandits" (CMAB). We analyze the theoretical properties of several variants of naive sampling, and empirically compare it against the other existing strategies in the literature for CMABs. We then evaluate these strategies in the context of real-time strategy (RTS) games, a genre of computer games characterized by their very large branching factors. Our results show that as the branching factor grows, naive sampling outperforms the other sampling strategies.


Optimal Policies for Observing Time Series and Related Restless Bandit Problems

The trade-off between the cost of acquiring and processing data, and uncertainty due to a lack of data is fundamental in machine learning. A basic instance of this trade-off is the problem of deciding when to make noisy and costly observations of a discrete-time Gaussian random walk, so as to minimise the posterior variance plus observation costs. We present the first proof that a simple policy, which observes when the posterior variance exceeds a threshold, is optimal for this problem. The proof generalises to a wide range of cost functions other than the posterior variance. This result implies that optimal policies for linear-quadratic-Gaussian control with costly observations have a threshold structure. It also implies that the restless bandit problem of observing multiple such time series, has a well-defined Whittle index. We discuss computation of that index, give closed-form formulae for it, and compare the performance of the associated index policy with heuristic policies. The proof is based on a new verification theorem that demonstrates threshold structure for Markov decision processes, and on the relation between binary sequences known as mechanical words and the dynamics of discontinuous nonlinear maps, which frequently arise in physics, control and biology.


Marginal likelihood based model comparison in Fuzzy Bayesian Learning

In a recent paper [1] we introduced the Fuzzy Bayesian Learning (FBL) paradigm where expert opinions can be encoded in the form of fuzzy rule bases and the hyper-parameters of the fuzzy sets can be learned from data using a Bayesian approach. The present paper extends this work for selecting the most appropriate rule base among a set of competing alternatives, which best explains the data, by calculating the model evidence or marginal likelihood. We explain why this is an attractive alternative over simply minimizing a mean squared error metric of prediction and show the validity of the proposition using synthetic examples and a real world case study in the financial services sector.


The Top 10 Topics in Machine Learning Revisited: A Quantitative Meta-Study

Which topics of machine learning are most commonly addressed in research? This question was initially answered in 2007 by doing a qualitative survey among distinguished researchers. In our study, we revisit this question from a quantitative perspective. Concretely, we collect 54K abstracts of papers published between 2007 and 2016 in leading machine learning journals and conferences. We then use machine learning in order to determine the top 10 topics in machine learning. We not only include models, but provide a holistic view across optimization, data, features, etc. This quantitative approach allows reducing the bias of surveys. It reveals new and up-to-date insights into what the 10 most prolific topics in machine learning research are. This allows researchers to identify popular topics as well as new and rising topics for their research.

While Sony unveiled footage from a handful of blockbuster hopefuls -- an adaptation of Stephen King's "Dark Tower," a reboot of the kids' flick "Jumanji" and the new "Spider-Man" flick -- the executive was most bullish about this summer's "Blade Runner 2049." Rothman made his Netflix diss after footage from the new Denis Villeneuve film played, insinuating that the movie's theatrical experience will exceed anything offered on the streaming site. A sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic, this time directed by Villeneuve, the film stars Harrison Ford and "an electrifying young star" -- Rothman's words -- in Ryan Gosling. Dressed in a hoodie and jean jacket, Gosling came out onstage to talk about his experience filming the movie in Budapest last year.
