Machine learning is going to alter our world fundamentally for the better, improving healthcare and the manufacturing industry, and assisting in the prediction of supply and demand levels across a range of industries. For those who are into science-fiction, the term "machine learning" immediately conjures up images of computers taking over the world, either to send murderous terminators from the future to our present or to place us all inside the Matrix as living power batteries. Fortunately, the truth about machine learning is not only far more prosaic, but also much more promising for the future of the human race. Basically, machine learning uses algorithms that iteratively learn from data, meaning that it enables computers to find hidden insights without being explicitly programmed where to look. The iterative aspect is especially important, as it means that as the computer is exposed to new data, it is able to adapt independently.

Hanson Robotics developed Sophia as part of its mission to "create genius machines that live and love," and work together with humans to build a "a smarter and better future."


Face-ageing method could boost search for missing people

Each year, over a million missing persons cases are reported in the US and UK, leaving families desperately searching for their loved ones. In the hope of boosting this search, researchers have developed a new and more accurate method of ageing facial images. They have tested their new software on an image of Ben Needham, who went missing when he was a toddler in 1991 on the Greek island of Kos. The resulting images are vastly different to the computer generated images of Ben as an adult produced by current face-ageing current software. This, they say, suggests that existing technology isn't up to the task.

Apple CEO Tim Cook finally lifts lid on self-driving car project

After years toiling away in secret on a car project, Apple chief executive Tim Cook has for the first time elaborated on the company's plans in the automotive market. "We're focusing on autonomous systems," Mr Cook said in a 5 June interview on Bloomberg Television that amounted to his most detailed comments yet on Apple's automotive plans. "It's a core technology that we view as very important." He likened the effort to "the mother of all AI projects," saying it's "probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on". The prospect of self-driving cars has seen a slew of technology companies push into the auto industry, according to McKinsey & Co. Alphabet's Waymo unit has signed partnerships with Fiat Chrysler and Lyft to develop the technology.
