Understanding The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In The Digital Workplace

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that digital workplaces are not as "digital" as they might think or that organizations are introducing digital transformation strategies slower than was thought. Recent research from Gartner, for example, shows that many workers believe that the organizations where they work are not keeping up with their digital needs and are out of touch. It also showed that less than 50 percent of workers -- both IT and non-IT workers believe that CIOs know what technology workers want and need. It also showed that there was some difference between the level of awareness of technology problems between Europe and the U.S. Further research from Blue Bell, Pa.-based information management specialist Unisys showed that more than half (51 percent) of digital workers at "technology laggard" organizations expressed frustration with their employer, as compared to only six percent of workers at "technology leader" organizations. The Unisys survey is particularly telling in that it surveyed 12,000 workers in April 2018 across 12 countries to gauge the attitudes of today's digital workers on how the technology used in the workplace impacts their day-to-day lives.

Microsoft tweaks facial-recognition tech to combat bias

Microsoft's facial-recognition technology is getting smarter at recognizing people with darker skin tones. On Tuesday, the company touted the progress, though it comes amid growing worries that these technologies will enable surveillance against people of color. Microsoft's announcement didn't broach the concerns; the company merely addressed how its facial-recognition tech could misidentify both men and women with darker skin tones. Microsoft has recently reduced the system's error rates by up to 20 times. In February, research from MIT and Stanford University highlighted how facial-recognition technologies can be built with bias. The study found that Microsoft's own system was 99 percent accurate when it came to identifying the gender of lighter-skinned people, but only 87 percent accurate for darker-skinned subjects.

Criteo unveils €20m AI research center to further machine learning in adtech

France-based adtech outfit Criteo has announced the launch of a €20m three-year project to further research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) that will see it work with clients and partners alike to further the use of machine learning in the advertising vertical. Dubbed Criteo AI Lab, the project will see it attempt to build "deep models that are interpretable, transparent and user-centric" then use these insights to form "industry standards for performance measurement and best practice", with the subsequent learnings to be made available to the entire industry. Criteo claims the project will also explore models for the responsible use of data – an increasingly high priority for advertisers as demonstrated by the Cambridge Analytica affair, as well as the introduction of General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) in the EU – with the company asserting the scheme will also help bridge theory and practice. Additionally, the adtech company claimed it is preparing a significant recruitment drive to man the project which is geared towards establishing Paris as a regional hub for AI research. JB Rudelle, Criteo, chief executive officer, said the lab was indicative of the company's efforts to establish the French capital as an epicenter for European adtech, as well as lead the industry conversation around machine learning.
