Syrian girl who used tuna cans for legs receives prosthetic limbs
An eight-year-old Syrian girl whose plight touched the world after she was photographed using tuna cans to walk has received prosthetic limbs in Turkey. Maya Merhi, who was born with no legs because of a rare congenital condition, had been living with her father at a refugee camp after fighting forced them from their home in Aleppo province. After fleeing to the northwestern region of Idlib, Maya was photographed struggling to move on homemade prosthetics made from tubes and old tins of tuna. Designed by her father Mohammad, who suffers from the same congenital disorder, the improvised legs were created to protect her from the hot, dirty and dusty ground. With the impromptu prosthetics, Maya was able to walk outside of her tent and could even attend the camp's school.

On 14 July last year, the Russian prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, and several members of his cabinet convened in an office building on the outskirts of Moscow. On to the stage stepped a boyish-looking psychologist, Michal Kosinski, who had been flown from the city centre by helicopter to share his research. Kosinski, a 36-year-old assistant professor of organisational behaviour at Stanford University, was flattered that the Russian cabinet would gather to listen to him talk. Kosinski's "stuff" includes groundbreaking research into technology, mass persuasion and artificial intelligence (AI) โ research that inspired the creation of the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. Five years ago, while a graduate student at Cambridge University, he showed how even benign activity on Facebook could reveal personality traits โ a discovery that was later exploited by the data-analytics firm that helped put Donald Trump in the White House.

Towards an endogenous regulation - with AI and Blockchain
When I concluded my final project report for the Warwick Business School Executive MBA last year, one of the summary points was that financial services regulators would soon need to start looking at'technology as law' and would need to write laws and policies to govern this change. Regulations would become endogenous rather than reactive as they are today. While this may look like something for the future, both regulators and member banks could find efficiencies in the near term by leveraging the advancements in technologies of both artificial intelligence and blockchain. In this blog, we will explore how much money is spent by large financial institutions in keeping up with the ever changing regulatory landscape, how smaller enterprises are carrying risks of penalties due to their inability to catch-up with the regulations and how regulators continue to have the dilemma on what's the right level of regulations. Using examples of GDPR and MIFID II, we will see what are the current challenges faced by these enterprises and how we can apply a combination of AI and blockchain to seek efficiencies and start moving towards'pro-active' regulation and maybe one day to endogenous regulations!
Machine Learning is Improving The Way These Prosthetic Limbs Perform - Geek.com
Prosthetic limb users may have a bright future to look forward to, in terms of new technology that can and will help them adapt to the challenges of using the tools. AS it turns out, according to Tech Xplore, the scientists at Imperial College London and the University of Gottingen have successfully utilized machine learning to help improve the performance of prosthetic hands. The team tested their prototypes on five amputees, and found that the new form of machine learning-based control was actually more adept at providing natural movements than what's currently available to users at this time. This research and its related findings, could potentially help to spark a "new generation of prosthetic limbs," according to the researchers. Professor Dario Farina, who authored the research paper from Imperial College London's Department of Bioengineering, stated that the main goal when designing "bionic" prosthetic limbs is to let patients control them as naturally as possible, as if they were actually their natural limbs, and this new machine-learning technology helps achieve that state as closely as possible, right now. The new bionic hand that's being worked on relies on a human-machine interface that actually helps interpret the user's intentions and sends various commands to the artificial limb, as you can see demonstrated in the video below.

How Chinese Internet Giant Baidu Uses Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
At the beginning of 2017, Chinese tech company Baidu, the largest provider of Chinese language internet search as well as other digital products and services, committed to emerging business sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Since China has 731 million internet users, almost twice the U.S. population, Baidu's data set is capable of fueling AI algorithms to make them even better. With this focus on artificial intelligence, Baidu is exploring some very intriguing applications for artificial intelligence and machine learning including in their offices where facial recognition technology makes standard ID cards unnecessary and allows you to order tea from a vending machine. They have also recruited top AI talent including one of the world's most notable AI pioneers Lu Qi, who was previously a Microsoft executive before he became Baidu's COO in January 2017. Qi will step down in July 2018 for personal reasons.

Retail wonk Blue Yonder turned the awesome power of its AI platform away from predicting how many pies Morrisons should shovel onto the shelves and instead focused its unfeeling gaze onto the beautiful game. The AI, which the boffins modestly claim was developed from techniques honed at CERN, gives England a 55.9 per cent chance of winning tomorrow night. IKEA managers will be able to rest easy, knowing that a UK-wide flatpack and meatball boycott is therefore unlikely to be on the cards. Unfortunately, England only have a 9.8 per cent chance of actually lifting the trophy.
Artificial Intelligence Might Affect How Studios Green-Light Movies
The Belgian artificial intelligence company ScriptBook is one such entity that could completely alter the industry. ScriptBook's technology works by analyzing the text of screenplays to produce box office forecasting for a film. In a presentation at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the company's founder, Nadira Azermai, outlined how ScriptBook's algorithms could have rejected scripts for Sony movies that were box office failures. Sony released 62 movies from 2015 to 2017, 32 of which lost money. By retroactively analyzing the screenplays, ScriptBook's system correctly identified 22 of the 32 films that ultimately lost money.
