Usually, if your robot is warm to the touch, it's symptomatic of some sort of horrific failure of its cooling system. Robots aren't supposed to be warm-- they're supposed to be steely and cold. Heat is almost always a byproduct that needs to be somehow accounted for and dealt with. Humans and many other non-reptiles expend a lot of energy keeping at a near-constant temperature, and as it turns out, being warmish all the time provides a lot of fringe benefits, including the ability to gather useful information about things that we touch. Now robots can have this ability, too.

Cambridge Consultants feels that technology should be able to get us past that moment of panic that comes when you're asked to choose a wine. The company has created Vinfusion, a device that enables people to blend a glass of wine that's been customized to their specific requirements. Vinfusion itself is a series of pipes, pumps, sensors and controllers that are designed to sit below the counter of a high-end bar or in a rich person's kitchen. Mounted into the tabletop is a tap that's connected to a conical centrifuge that rolls down toward the pouring spout. Sat beside the Vinfusion tap is a tablet with an app that lets you pick a wine to match your menu or customize one yourself.

Which job is AI going to eat next? Step forward, CCTV operators

NEC Corporation, one of Japan's biggest IT providers, says it has built an AI that can rapidly search CCTV footage and spot a specific person out of a million or more faces. The application – snappily titled NeoFace Image data mining – can find wanted criminals, missing kids, and so on, all from video surveillance. We're told "when searching video where roughly one million individual instances of facial data appear, the software is capable of conducting searches within approximately 10 seconds." In other words, you can feed 24 hours of CCTV into NeoFace, and it could identify, say, a million faces in the video frames. Then when you need to find a sought-after person, the software will take just seconds to scan the database and locate them.
